I think this is a smart goal for a dance major, since they can’t expect a performing career to last long. Another poster recently raised this question in another thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/dance-major/955902-bfa-ba-programs-do-these-seem-good-me.html

Mercyhurst and Point Park in PA have majors in dance pedagogy and minors or classes in arts administration; these seem like places to investigate. Can your d talk to her current studio’s owner to ask for some ideas?

Take business courses in addition to dance, including accounting. Make sure to study lots of kinds of dance, including hip hop, tap, ballet, jazz, etc. Knowledge of fitness, kick-boxing, Pilates, Zumba, Yoga, and such can help you build a studio that can appeal to the masses. You can’t teach every single class, but the more you know the better quality teachers you can hire–you’ll know what to look for. When you start out you’ll be teaching most everything yourself. Understanding accounting will help you keep the books. Many studio owners regret delegating the business side, as people can rob you blind. Working in a successful studio can also help you learn the ropes before you start your own. A well-managed dance studio can earn a lot of money, but it takes dedication, luck, hard work, business smarts, and time to build up a clientele.
