Want to see Asperger's specialist, but none in my region...

I would like to ask for some advice: is there any way to get an Asperger's specialist if one is not available near you? There are no specialists in my area or at my school, and I would like to follow the recommendation of one CC parent and start seeing a specialist. If someone could help me out on this, I would appreciate it.

By the way, this is somewhat urgent, because my friend told me that some of the people in my classes are so incredibly scared or annoyed at me that they do not want to be in class with me anymore. These people are on the verge of filing formal complaints against me with the college. If anyone could help me ASAP, I would be grateful.

Contact your college's disability service office.

I did, and all I got were social workers who know little about Asperger's.

simfish has asperger's I think....ask him

although I'm not sure

Try this site: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/asperger/asperger.htm

They have a list of related organizations. I would recommend you contact some or all of them. Unless you are in the middle of nowhere there should be someone near you that treats Aspergers.

This site may be helpful too. http://users.wpi.edu/~trek/aspergers.html

Good luck.

Where are you?
Locally (New Jersey) I have heard a lot about Jed Baker. He seems to specialize in the social skills side of things...

Contact the American Psychology Association, which has info about licensed psychologists' specialties. You may even be able to get this info directly from their website.

Because you are fortunately in a part of the country in which there are many well trained mental health specialists, you should be able to find someone within a reasonable distance who has the expertise to help you.

Here's an Asperger's website with lots of links that probably could be helpful to you.:http://users.wpi.edu/~trek/aspergers.html#internet

try contacting

autism or Asperger's diagnosis. Participants will receive up to
$225 for 4 visits. Please call toll-free (888) 288-6162 for

they might be able to give you #'s in your area

and you might get some inspiration from Dr Grandins story
http://www.templegrandin.org/

A New Jersey place that might be helpful: http://www.bancroft.org/

A few other suggestions:

Try the website OASIS, an on-line site of Asperger resources, to see if there is something listed in your area.

If not, then contact the nearest CHILDREN"S HOSPITAL affiliated with a medical school. Ask for the child psychiatry division and make contact with a psychiatrist who works with adolescents/young adults. This would also be a place to start.

The American Psychological Association's website is www.apa.org
Also, there is a lot of overlap in symptomatology between Aspergers and NVLD (NonVerbal Learning Disabilities). So, you might also try the NLD websides (NLDontheweb.com is one that comes to mind). The O.A.S.I.S. site that Robyrm mentioned is an excellent site. We do not know where you are located, but your state's Psychological Association should also be able to help with referrals. As others have mentioned, Autism Centers, teaching hospitals and private practitioners should be able to help, in either your college town or home town.

Addendum: Who made the diagnosis and when?? They should be able to help as well.

Richard L Simpson and Brenda Myles work at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. They have an Autism/Asperger center there, and may have referrals for your area. Go to www.ku.edu and search under "people".

Look at
http://www.autism.org//interview/simpson.html
for an idea of some of their work.
