Want to shadow doctor for more than one time.

Hey guys so I recently got this really cool opportunity to shadow a doctor. He's a surgeon and I'm really exicited. However, it seems as though he just wants to do it once. But do you guys think it would be possible for me to be able to shadow him like on a routine basis? Thanks

Motivated

I wouldn’t.

If you really want to work with him more, ask if maybe you can help work on one of his research projects (if he is not just a practicing physician). Otherwise, you’re probably somewhat of a burden to him + it doesn’t add much for college or for yourself intellectually.

however, one thing i didn’t mention is that I do plan on applying to some bs md programs— so should I try to continue this with him for these programs?

I doubt more time shadowing a doctor make a big difference for your bsmd programs. Anyone can get a physician shadow. What sets people apart is actual work done for/with the physician.

It’s about patient privacy-you are not an intern or resident. Plus with swine flu going around no one under the age of 18 is allowed to be in the hospital unless as an admitted patient.

yeah… don’t shadow just because it’ll “look good”. Shadowing doesn’t mean that much.

I suggest you a) do some volunteer work at a hospital
b) shadow him for at least a week or two to see if you like it.

My friend wanted to be a vet for the longest time, shadowed a vet for a few weeks during the summer, and HATED the idea of working in a clinic for the rest of her life.

She now wants to be a wildlife vet or some sort like that, that does not work in a confined area/ clinic. haha
