Want to Switch from Bio Major (pre-med) to Comp Sci

I have been thinking about becoming a computer science major over the summer. Now that I am in college again, I am about 90% sure that I do not want to go to medical school anymore. I don't think it is worth the time to spend all those grueling years in med school and residency anymore. I would rather establish myself, live life during my twenties, and have a decent salary coming straight out of college, than waste away my years in med school and residency. The other 10% is holding me back because I just want to make sure I am making the correct decision by changing my career path. I really don't want to be a doctor THAT badly anymore.

I have always enjoyed computers and I have always wanted to know how the hell computers gather all that information in a useable form and the intricacies of the science that deals with computers and how they work.

I am currently studying for my Genetics and Orgo I exams wishing that I would be coding right now or understanding some theoretical concepts dealing with computers rather than looking at these god damn molecules and chromosomes. What do you guys think of my situation? In your opinion, am I making the right decision?

Background Info: I go to The College of New Jersey and I am a sophomore Biology major.

Have you taken any CS courses yet?

Have you planned out a CS major schedule for your remaining five semesters?

If you really do not want to be a physician, then there is no point in doing pre-med. Note, however, the majoring in biology is not required to do pre-med (and biology has poor job and career prospects by itself).

Oh I am sorry. I forgot to mention that I took Intro to Computer Science 101, the first comp sci class at Rutgers Newark over the summer. I really liked that class. I got an A (I also have a 3.5 GPA if that matters to you guys) and I enjoyed the homework and programming assignments I was given even though it was the summer. I don’t think I have ever said that I “enjoyed” doing a bio assignment. ever. I also will be talking to my advisor on Thursday to discuss my situation and what my future plans will be.

Definitely switch. CS will open a lot of doors, and if it’s something you’ll love, it’ll take you far. Do not commit to something you do not enjoy; it’ll make the rest of college (and finding a job) not fun. If you need to catch up on courses, that’s what summers are for! And if you have a natural aptitude, you can probably place out anyway. Don’t hesitate.

Switch! Don’t look back.

Welcome to the world of computer science.

You will probably need a few more CS courses to get admitted to the program. Based on a generalization of most schools CS programs and admission, you will need to take:

1) Programming I
2) Programming II
3) Discrete Structures
4) Calculus I
5) Calculus II

At a minimum

People I know in med school have always told me that you really have to be passionate about medicine in order to survive life as a med student and later as a doctor. It’s definitely not the place for people who aren’t really sure about it or people who are only in it for the money.

So if you really do enjoy CS more than Bio, I wholeheartedly encourage you to switch.

Edit: Although I do love orgo. Being able to come up with pathways for synthesizing molecules is awesome. (I could make meth! :D)

Thanks guys. I have made my decision and switched my major and am no longer on the pre-med track! excited to start fresh.

Welcome to the dark side.
