So I called to school and they told me that there will be a warm up to begin the day. I have visions of people trying to out sing each other, and psyc everyone out. Is there a reason that a group warm up is done? I was told that I would also be assigned a practice room as well.
ALSO
I’ve read and heard that the dance audition is doable if you dont have a strong dance backround. Can anyone confirm this?
thanks

Hey! I auditioned on December 6, and yes, we did warm up as a group. It didn't feel competitive to me. We just sang and did our thing. I suggest warming up before you get there though, because we didn't warm up a lot. On my day, we didn't get a practice room or anything, but maybe they'll change it. Not sure.

And the dance isn't terribly hard. It's kind of challenging, and really fast. But there is a ton of room to show your personality even if you don't get all the steps. So smile and have a good attitude and everything will be fine!

Break a leg!

Could you give us a run-through of your schedule for the day? Should my D show up in dance clothes because it is first, or change because it is later? Thanks so much!

Yes please! That would be great!

I can definitely run down the day for you!

First, everyone auditioning/interviewing for any program meets in Hamilton Hall. From there, students are taken by major to where they will be auditioning. Parents are told to stay in Hamilton Hall to wait for their kids. The theatre students go hear the director of the theatre school talk about the different programs. From there, the theatre students are broken up by program (acting, MT, theatre management, etc). Musical Theatre students are then lead through a warm up and then sing 16 bars of a song and do one monologue. Once you are done, you are free for about an hour-- some chose to get lunch. After everyone has gone, a callback list is posted. If you are not on the list, you are no longer being considered for the program, and your day is done. However, if you are called back, you then go learn a dance combination. After you dance, they then call each person in one by one and either ask for more material (another song or monologue) or they ask you to rework your material. After you are done, you are free to go.

If anyone has anymore questions, feel free to let me know! I had a great time auditioning. I found it to be a really fun day.

I do recommend bringing a snack or something though, because you might not have time in between your first audition and when the callback list is posted to go out and get something. I didn't have time because I was one of the last to go. So if you are one to get hungry, I suggest bringing something to tide you over.

musicislife, thanks so much for your "run down." DD is auditioning next weekend and any info helps. Also, congrats on making the waitlist. I think that is great!

you are very welcome! I hope your D enjoys her audition! It has been my favorite one so far! If there are any more questions, send me a PM. I'm more than willing to help!

I was told over the phone that I would be able to sing one piece, 2 minutes worth of one. Where did 16 bars come from?

Once we got there, they told us to sing 16 bars. Maybe things are different this time around. It kind of seemed like my audition day was kind of the guinea pig group because they have never done a callback system before.

Are you sure about the 2 minutes of one song? That seems very long. Typically, song requirements are 16 or 32 bars and monologues are designated for a certain amount of time; usually 1 or 2 minutes. I would double check just to be sure. Good luck!!!

musicislife Congrats on the waitlist!!

Well I just checked the audition requirements on UArts website. It does say 2 contrasting songs not to exceed 4 minutes total. Just to have all bases covered, you might want to come up with a 16 bar cut and a 32 bar cut for each of your songs. When my son auditioned last year, he made sure that for all his songs he had a 16 bar and 32 bar cut because each school had different requirements. For the schools that did not provide accompanists, he also had different CD's made. He had his 16 bar cut CD (clearly marked as such), a 32 bar cut CD, and a CD with the entire song.

My son also auditioned on 12/6. What was on the web site was irrelevent since, as indicated above, they changed procedures and instituted a call back system. Most of the kids including mine were surprised by the change so it does seem that you need to be prepared for anything. He did have a fun time auditioning and thought everyone was very friendly. There was also a presentation for parents on financhial aid and a brief outdoor tour of the campus. We just learned yesterday that he was admitted. Needless to say, we are all very happy.

Congratulations to your son, sonlovesmt!

Do you know if there is any change to the Regional audition information. I don't know how they could have a call back system since they just give one time slot (no dance-you just prepare a 2 minute solo.)
My D is planning to use a song different from all the other auditions since it is a time allotment and not 16/32 bars. If they asked her to only do 16 or 32 bars her song wouldn't work. I suppose she'll just have everything on standby and wait to see what they ask for.

Because of all of the changes that have occurred in the audition process and the potential differences between on-site and regional, it may make sense to call the School of Theatre Arts office. Ask for Andrew or Darin.

I think that is a great suggestions from Michael NKat. I met another mother at the 12/6 audition, who called U Arts days before the audition and was informed there would be a call back that day so her dauther was one of the few who knew what to expect. I wish I had the foresight to call. Everyone I have come in contact with at U Arts has been friendly and eager to help.

Soozievt,
Thank you for your congrats as well as for fixing my posts on the acceptance lists. My "S" was definately the one who was accepted. I have been "lurking" for awhile and learned a great deal from this site.

I called U arts today. They said that the 1st song could be up to 2 mins. they may stop you, but you may sing one of your songs. Not just 16 bars. I will however have 16, and 32 bars marked out.

Good idea! Break a leg, tinysinger! I hope it goes well for you! You should find it to be a relatively chill/fun day. Let us know how it goes!

Best of luck! I was at the 12/6 audition as well. Don't let the chance intimidate you, everyone there is extremely friendly-especially the students helping out with the audition. Be sure to introduce yourself--they are more than happy to answer any and all questions about the programs. Some of the faculty introduced themselves as well. The head of the program and the dance instructor who led our audition were both wandering through the waiting room shaking hands with everyone before they went in. I had a very positive experience and am sure you will, too. Break a leg!
