I'm considering WUStL for ED. I want to know how good the mechanical engineering at the uni is. Comparatively as well as by availability of research facility and that kinda stuff...

someone? anyone?
i was hoping more wustl students frequented this forum.

i had a question about the poly sci and no one answered

for engineering, with all do respect, i would go to northwestern, since its in the area (midwest)

Hi. I am going into my Sophomore year for Mechanical Engineering at WashU. I have really enjoyed my experience so far and have not regretted going to WashU (even though I got into "better" engineering schools such as Carnegie Mellon). There are tons of ways to get involved during your freshman year. Our engineering student council has been named number 1 for the past few years. They host many great events and inform you of a lot of opportunities in the engineering school. There are also some really cool classes for freshmen that are led by students. I am a course assistant next year for the Freshman Engineering Seminar (teaches about all the different fields of engineering while completing simple projects in groups....It's meant to be a fun, no pressure class) and a Robotics class (brand new class that has students teach Freshman or Sophomores how to build and program a mini-sumo robot. There is a competition at the end of the year which is a lot of fun).

As for MechE classes, freshman year you will take CAD and Design. CAD is a great class that teaches you how to do technical sketching and how to use CAD software. THe Professor, Jerry Craig, really knows his stuff. He taught the first University CAD class ever (back in the 50's I think). Design is a class where you get hands on experience. Your grade in that class depends on how well your creation works in the competition.

As for availablity of research...It's there if you ant to do it. All it takes is sending out a few emails and finding a Professor that is looking for help. I don't think many students do this freshman year, as you have so much other stuff going on and you don't really have a lot of engineering experience. However, if you are intrested in Aerospace, there is a class that is led by some of the engineering faculty that involves working on a nano-satellitte to compete in the Nanosat-4 competition. If we come in first, we get a launch. (We came in second during the last competition). You can take this class freshman year.

All that said, visit the school...especially if you want to apply ED. WashU was the school where I felt most comfortable...and that counts for just as much as every other factor. Talk to students, visit classes in the fall, and stay overnight. Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

thanks for the info buffyAngel.
being an international student i can't visit the university and have to rely on stats and other students' perspectives.
btw the robotics and the aerospace thing sound cool. i would be interested in both. i'll pm you more questions :D
