yeah quaker schools aren’t really like going to a catholic its much more of a philosophy of education than a religious idea about how to run an institute of education

I just found out today that the DC in Washington DC means District of Columbia.
I always thought that the District of Columbia was some little island like the Dominican Republic or something.

@2010 hopeful – LOL!! Hahaha I’m really sorry for laughing at your last post but I thought it sounded funny when I read it. Everybody I’ve ever encountered on the internet or elsewhere knows that DC is the capital of the U.S., so its very refreshing to encounter somebody for whom Washington, DC is a new concept. :)

P.S. Once again, I’m very very very sorry if I offended you by laughing! I honestly meant no offence to you and found your post funny, original, and refreshing. Thanks for sharing, your post really made my day! :)

P.S.S. Do you live in the outside of the U.S.? Just curious. :)

LucieTheLakie-
I meant no offense with my reference that “being a Quaker school could possibly be a major negative”. I was simply trying to show that based on preferences, this is a categorical example of what could be a detraction for a candidate, and therefore it is very difficult to generalize any school as “the best”. I could have easily plugged in Catholic, Protestant, or any other category (besides religion). Sorry if my wording offended you, or anyone in a way that implied offense to Quakers, that wasn’t my intent.

I stand corrected, you did not say Sidwell was the best. My apologies.

My point on athletics, was based on relativity. Sidwell may do well within the MAC, but the MAC is not even on the same field as the IAC or some other conferences. So, the point simply is that if top athletics is a key criteria for a candidate, Sidwell is not (with the exception of certain niche sports they excel in like soccer, or tennis as you point out) at the level of many of these other schools.

Nationaal Merit scholars? I’m far more interested in the overall academics of a school and its quality, versus the small handful that perform at the very top.

Yes, I am a big Prep supporter. And I am not Catholic, so take care with your generalization. I am also very fond of a number of other schools, like St. Albans as an example. And yes, we applied at both Prep and St. Albans. Another generalization that doesn’t work here.

I maintain that the G Prep 23% acceptance rate is one of the lowest in the country. And, this is afterall, a D.C. focused thread. Can’t comment on St. Anselms SATs. But I do know St. Albans, even though they are not published. I have very much been inside there, and I will tell you that they are higher than Georgetown Prep, but only marginally.

The $27K price tag was in reference to other Catholic schools, which are signifcantly less than GP. Certainly right up there in firing range of many of the other top school (Potomac).

Finally, I took your advice and read up what was blogged on DC Urban Moms and Dads. Interesting comments. I will say that the mixed bag of commentary was pretty similar to what you read on any of the other schools that have their own thread. As you would expect, any school has its supporters and its detractors. My experience is that while many people will provide objective commentary, a large percentage write from the standpoint of:
- Self-actualization of the school they have chosen or gotten into. They need to validate their decision and where they are at.
- Being bitter about a place they didn’t get accepted at.
- Disgruntlement because their child is not fitting in as well as they had designs on.

Does this resonate?

@luckyduckyme

Yes, I live in the united states and knew that washington DC was the capital but I never heard of the district of columbia before. I just imagined it to be like puerto rico or and island in the carribbean.

2010 hopeful – Oh ok. Haha now that I really think about it I guess it could sound like the name of a foreign island. :)

2O10 hopeful: What schools are you applying to? Your posts to this site are amazingly creative and thoughtful, and therefore I can’t help to ask.

Thanks

I was just accepted to Prep!

Jacksonneaglibj, do you apply for finaid?

No I did not, napviet

Results yet anyone? List them here!

We have been happy with the Saint James School, outside of Hagerstown. They are in the MAC laegue.
I believe the tuition st St James is a bit lower than the District private schools

Any thoughts regarding this choice?

My son goes to Georgetown Prep and my daughter Georgetown Visitation so feel free to PM me if you want my opinion.

What is your candid experience with Prep?

Anyone accepted to St. Albans or Sidwell Friends?

I go to potomac and let me say that I is better in almsot every aspect then maret, I looked into Potomac, Maret, St. Albans, Sidwell (didnt apply tho), and GDS. My top choices were potomac and GDS, and I got into both. I chose potomac because the academics were basically identical. ( I also have friends that go to all of theses schools), and because I live in VA. Potomac does not really get mentioned in these discussions because well its not really in DC, but academically it is identical with GDS, Just throwing that out there

DON’T go to Sidwell. I live in the area. It is NOT a great school if you are a really good student. I know someone who goes there and they have a C average.

Everyone is right when they say Georgetown Prep is amazing.
Are you a girl? Garrison Forest is also good but it’s all girls.
a few Catholic schools are DeMatha, Visitation, St. Johns, and Good Counsel. Though none of these are great schools. DeMatha has great sports if your into that.
Washington International School (WIS) is amazing, my friend goes there and it’s one of the best Washington area school.

Potomac is really nice. Sidwell friends is good too. The president’s and vp’s kids and grandkids go there. I got accepted to Potomac, but never went. I like it better than Sidwell because of the urban campus.
