High Schools in Washington, D.C. Area

I'll be in 8th grade this fall, so I gotta start doing the application stuff for high school this fall... and I have a lot of choices. My choices are:
Walter Johnson-my home school, they have an APEX program there that seems pretty good, you have to apply to it, but I'm pretty sure I'll get in (not to sound arrogant or anything) cuz I'm already in one of the magnet middle schools in the area and a straight A student.

Richard Montgomery-I'm applying for the IB program there

Blair-Applying for the magnet program there as well, not CAP though

Maret-private school, taking the SSAT this fall

What are the good and bad aspects of each, and how would they would benefit me, especially for college (the only reason why my parents want me to go to a private school is for an ivy college...)? Do any of you guys know what the acceptance rate is for these schools? and what kind of questions will they ask me for the interview for maret? Cuz I suck at coming up with answers on the spot... (ik, lots of questions, sorry)

A little about me (might help dunno): Ive played the violin since I was 7, I was in first violin last year for MCYO (Maryland classical youth orchestra, really competitive, link mcyo.org) auditioning agin this year, I was on the cross country team last year and I'm joining again this year, I'm a straight A student, and Im looking for another extracirricular cuz that's about it... I might try martial arts or a drawing class... Any ideas?

Btw, yes, I do know about other private schools in the area like NCS, Holton-Arms, Sidwell, etc., but my parents arent gonna let me apply for them, so yeah... Thanks a lot people

You should filter your choices for day schools in the D.C. area (notorious for traffic congestion) by reasonable commuting distance.

Walter Johnson is only about 2 miles away from my home, my current bus stop is also a bus stop for RM (it takes like 20-30 minutes to get there, max I think), my middle school is 0.8 miles from Blair (my current bus stops at Blair first to drop off the high schoolers, and then it goes to my school to drop everyone else off, so I would just go on the same bus, takes like 25 minutes), and the metro station is barely a block away from me (for Maret)…

I know this isn’t really helpful, but I live in the DC Area too :)

Have you considered private schools in Northern Virginia?

The Walter Johnson APEX program is really just this: a program that pushes you to take as many AP classes as you can before you graduate high school. The more AP classes, the better. How do I know? Because I went to the school and graduated in 2010. The best choice I think is the Blair magnet program. You get a diverse collection of classes and enrichment opportunities: such as Intel STS + Siemens competition support, advanced math classes, very advanced computer science classes, and most importantly, good teaching.

All the public HS options you mentioned are great. Not sure why people choose overpriced private schools when the publics are so good.

Sent from my SCH-I510 using CC

You know why people don’t go to the public schools in Northern Virginia?
Well In my school at least in Northern Virginia 1/5th of the students go to community college

Convince your parents to let you apply to the others you’ve mentioned. They are very good.

Secondly, apply to the Potomac School in Virginia, if you can. It is close to D.C. I applied there several years ago and got in after an easy admissions process. Very good school.

Try TJHSST if you can.

Best wishes + feel free to DM me if you have questions.

I took the SSAT and got a 2259 (totally failed on the reading comprehension part… XD) Does anyone know anything about RM? I heard that a lot of people there are cutt-throat competitive and there’s so much work that you don’t get time for ECs… but I don’t wanna base my opinion just off that.

@ Orbit 196: I’ve heard. But is that a bad thing? Yeah, part of the reason why I like Blair is cuz of the science and comp sci, which are my two weaker areas.

@ booksandlax: no, but we’re not going to

@ ameripen: I might also apply to NCS, we went to the open house last week, and even though nothing really stood out, it doesn’t seem too bad either, so I might be applying there as well.
No, we’re not considering TJ or Potomac. Sorry
