I'm applying to both of these schools and I constantly go back and forth between which one I would go to if I got accepted to both. Which one do you think is a better overall school? and not that this will affect my decision but which one is harder to get into assuming you live out of state? Any help would be appreciated because I really cant decide!

if you are rushing a frat id go to washington and lee, if not id probably go to w and m. both are good schools.

It would help if the factors that make them different that matter to you were in your question. Out of state admission to William and Mary puts it in the same range as Washington and Lee--highly selective.

William and Mary has much broader economic diversity and ethnic diversity among your peers, although Washington and Lee does offer scholarships and is working hard to dispel their reputation for a conservative and wealthy hard liquor drinking student body. Over 80% in Greek life in Lexington is pretty hard to overlook and isn't going to change anytime soon.
Williamsburg is closer to a more bustling section of Virginia..doesn't take long to get to Virginia coast, not that far from our Capitol City either. William and Mary has a much more extensive catalogue for major and minor course selection if you go through some changes in four years. Wm and Mary has a large contingency of high-acheiver Northern Virginians who are used to a more stressful Beltway existence and you will be aware of that in the air. On the other hand, relations with faculty are amazingly accessible for a public college of its size. Dorms at Wm and Mary are pretty basic, which is where you will realize you are in a public institution. When you are in a classroom, you could be at any excellent private school.

Washington and Lee offers the best overall picture for a student who wants to work closely with faculty members. All small classrooms all the time. The college is rather beautiful and well-maintained. Whenever I am in sleepy Lexington, even in the evenings I see full professors chatting with students on the grounds and in the little places to eat in town. Washington and Lee grads build very close bonds and they do represent many regions of the USA. Alum tend to be very supportive of each other and you will make friends from interesting families from many states. Fly fishing is popular, and the town and mountains are relaxing. Classes are very demanding but the entire school is supportive and personal.

just some of my observations....I am a parent of a college bound senior.

W&L is TINY there are only 2,000 undergrads (which is smaller than the # of kids at my HS). I'd never go there just because it's too small.
