Washington University in St. Louis or Johns Hopkins?

I am a senior in high school and have come down to the stage of deciding which school to attend for the next four years. While I have been waitlisted to a few schools, on a practical level, my choice is between Washington University in St. Louis and Johns Hopkins. I haven't visited either school yet, but I have heard great things about each. I want to go into archaeology and go on to get a PhD in that field. However, I would like to focus more on medieval european archaeology, and from the research I have done, it seems that Wash U has more for that than Hopkins, a lot more. However I am not sure. I also prefer a nice setting, nice architecture, interiors, good faculty relationships, numerous resources, opportunities, and many other things I can't think of. I am not crazy for parties, but I am not antisocial. I do not intend to join a frat, but I would like to join some clubs (I am big on the environment, all different types of music, travel, vegan). Overall, I love to learn, and want a school that will allow me to endure what I love to do, while not exploiting it to the point of misery. I really would like a school that has a good amount of humanities programs like I described, so that I can basically have a major in archaeology but focused in medieval europe. I want to be able to take a lot of interesting classes. I want to be able to learn as much as I can (get my money's worth!) Thanks for all of the help, I desperately need it since both are such great contenders.

Johns Hopkins has excellent humanities departments, but they are small, and this could be a problem for you since you have specific interests. The English Department there has not had a medievalist on the faculty for years. For the humanities, JHU is really a better place for people who are willing to get into their various teachers’ enthusiasms, than for people who come in already sure of their intellectual path. The Humanities Center, for instance, comprises a bunch of quite fascinating intellectuals but doesn’t offer “coverage” of historical periods or disciplines, as many schools and departments try to do.

I don’t know enough about WashU to make a comparison.

Weather: Hopkins
Academics: Equal
Diversity: Hopkins
Reputation: Hopkins
Cost: Not sure what you’re looking for
Hot girls: Both are frankly quite dismal

“Weather: Hopkins”

Too funny. Honestly, the weather is not wonderul in the winter for either location. St. Louis is also not Chicago.

fullfisting… I don’t think you read OP’s post carefully.

WUSTL has a great archaeology program that is very strong in European/Eurasian human development. They are also very accommodating if you’d like to combine this with a second major in medieval studies through the Interdisciplinary Project in the Humanities.

Proximity to a large Zoo: WUSTL

Baltimore is the 11th most dangerous city in America but St Louis is #1 most dangerous :)

There is a Washington University in St. Louis? Who would have guessed!

^^^That is the problem with Washington University informative. For such an excellent school many people have never heard of it, let alone know where it is located. I’m referring to the general public of course and certainly not those who are enlightened about such things.

I can’t imagine saying that mouthful when people ask WUSTL students where they go. Do they just say WOOSLE?

It’s Wash U…

^^Is that the one in Seattle or D.C.? I mean I know the University of Phoenix has campuses all over the country. ;-)

or how about “I’m going to Washu”…you’re going to wash me??..***.

Yes, it’s one of those satellite campuses like Penn State in Philadelphia.:)
