WashU Beyond Boundaries

The Beyond Boundaries program looks unique as it takes interdisciplinary studies students and gives them a sense of community. I’m wondering, given that we know how admissions go, what other schools may have similar. I know that you can create your own major or double major and find like-minded students everywhere, but I’m interested in schools that have looked to create a formal program for interdisciplinary studies and most of all, the students in this way.

Thanks to all responses!

It sounds like Wash U is trying to create what is a common experience at most small liberal arts colleges. Colby, Middlebury, and Pitzer would be examples of this. There are many more.

Thank you Bill, that’s very helpful and also lets me refine the question. I agree that the idea of this program is to create a small liberal arts type of school within a larger university. So, my follow-up is question - are there similar programs in other similar sized or larger schools? I think Michigan’s Honors college may be similar and Duke has a more science based interdisciplinary program. Just curious if anyone knows of anything in the Beyond Boundaries style at other mid and large size schools.

I’m guessing that it is unique. Thanks for calling it to our attention. I know someone for whom it might be the perfect fit.

It sounds similar to various honors college programs, frankly (all with their own different flavor).

Cal(Berkeley)'s Interdisciplinary Studies major seems to be in a similar vein.
