Will WashU match need-based aid from other institutions? Cornell offered me more, but I really think WashU is a better fit for me. It’s also not a drastic difference, probably like 6k.
No way to know unless you ask. My gut tells me they will because Cornell is exactly the type of institution that WashU wants to snag people from. However, it is very important that you approach it correctly. Don’t simply ask them to match Cornell’s financial aid. Tell them that Wash U is your first choice, but that financial aid is a big consideration in your final decision. Then bullet point some of your financial circumstances (ex: excessive medical bills, unemployment within the past five years or so, more than one child in college, first-generation college student, age of parents close to retirement – whatever applies to your situation). Then lay out the specific FA package Cornell gave you and attach a copy. Make it a nice, polite letter. And do it ASAP. Work on it this weekend, and send on Monday morning.
@brantly thank you so much! I’ll get on it ASAP. I just wanted to make sure whether or not WashU has a tendency to be unwilling to negotiate.
Don’t use the word “negotiate” in your communication with them. And good luck
