Well, now that my spring break is over, it is time for me to decide on a college. It seems to have come down to WashU vs. Northwestern. At WashU, my declared major is biomedical engineering. In addition, their engineering school has given me a sizable scholarship. At Northwestern, I had set my sights on HPME but did not make it in. As a remnant of that application, my declared major is chemistry. My college plan is to do research as an undergraduate and to enter medical school.
Herein lies my predicament: Northwestern would be better for engineering and WashU would be better for non-engineering life sciences (based on rankings). How easy is it to transfer between schools at these two colleges? Do I risk losing my engineering scholarship if I change majors at WashU? I love both schools and am having a difficult time deciding between the two. I am leaning towards WashU but my parents seem to be leaning towards Northwestern. Financial aid is currently about the same at both schools. How should I make a good decision here?

This really is a tough decision. I think that overall Northwestern’s prestigious medical program would take you farther for your money. Not that WashU’s programs arent up to par (they may even be better for your specific field), but I think the medical experience is stronger at NW and you have access to better research opportunities and such if you want to eventually go to med school.

i agree that NW may be more prestigious, but for premed? doubt it
Wash U has one of the BEST medical schools in the country (i think its number 2) and premed there is supposed to be superb. i have a few friends in it, and while it is brutal its fantastic preparation for medical school, not to mention that wash u churns out research like clockwork.

as for other things to consider, NW has more greek life, wash u facilities are NEW and PRETTY, idk about NW. more sports at NW (wash u football is lacking… basketball more popular), more school spirit at NW, and both places have great locations. i think that NW campus is nicer, but Wash Us buildings are nicer. I recently went to Wash U on a prefrosh visit, and everyone there was friendly and just socially open to everyone else. however, i have yet to go to NW for my final visit there.

Im interested in this post though. got in to both and have to chose …

Also of note, Wash U has more of a southern bent, wheras NU is solidly Mid-western.

Also, Wash U helps its graduates about as little as it possibly can.

engineering: NU
chemistry: NU
bio: WashU
premed: hard to say (so many factors go into it anyway)
