Watch out, it's an admissions counselor!

hrhcow: You may want to be a little more specific by what you mean by oriental studies? Are you referring to East Asian studies, or the Orient as studied at the Oriental Institute? This might save Libby some time in answering.

sorry. i meant specifically east asian studies.

my list of schools:

UC Irvine
UCSB
UCLA
UC berkeley
UC San Diego
Georgetown
Columbia (ED?)
Johns Hopkins ( maybe)
Stanford (EA or RD need help deciding)
northwestern
brown
Princeton(ED)-Common APP
U of Chicago EA
Cornell-COMMON APP
Harvard-Common APP
Carnegie Mellon-Common APP (maybe)
Duke-COMMON APP (maybe)
Dartmouth-Common APP ( maybe)
Upenn-COMMON APP

that's a lot of schools, so how do I cut them down? what I'm looking for in a school:

-mediocre weather
-nice buildings
-good surrounding city with lots to do
-GRADE INFLATION ( easier to get A's than other schools... I know university of Chicago has grade deflation which is horrible)
-i need to get into a good law school, which school will help me do this?

My stats:
- My fully weighted g.p.a that even weights college summer courses is:
9-11 4.1 W ( Georgetown EA, or Univer of Chicago EA or Columbia ED)
9-12 4.2 W ( RD applications most of those schools) 3.7 uw
10-11 4.5 W 3.88 uw(princeton ED, uc's) uc g.p.a is 4.2 capped
10-12 4.57 W 3.91 uw ( Stanford ) RD

please keep in mind this is my FULLY weighted gpa means weighting colleges summer courses taken at uc berkeley as well

SAT 1: 2200
SAT 2: US 770, MATH 2c 790, math 1c 780

HUGE UPWARD TREND IN GRADES!! i have great valid reasons for this! Will schools even take pity on me and might even consider taking out freshman year? I emailed Dartmouth undergrad and they said they might and that would make my gpa about a 3.9 + uw at every school I apply to and that would make a HUGE difference in RD or ED/EA applications

rec's and essays should be good... i'm spending a lot of time on them even now!

EC's:

Football 400 yard sprint winner

honor roll, but that isn't important and also almost perfect attendance so far

also which schools do you think I should totally cross off my list because I won't even have a slight chance there.. please be honest thanks!

ED: Princeton or Columbia or Penn
EA: University of Chicago
-----------------------------IMPORTANT BELOW
Ok here's how I see it, my main goal is to apply to as many places as I can early? Why? If i get accepted my senior year will be 400 % better... So i need to know my chances for these early applications above : ) I can relax, party, so virtually I need to know what school i'll have the best chance at early...

i'm applying to UoC for sure early now deciding between Penn, Columbia, or Princeton ED

Did summer programs at UC Berkeley and did quite well

You probably should post elsewhere (maybe you did? - I don't read all sections of the board), since it is pretty obvious that you don't really want to go to Chicago. The answer to your questions it that you will get the best ED advantage at Penn -- you should double check this, but I'm pretty sure that Penn is the Ivy that takes the largest proportion of its class ED and/or has the highest admission rate for ED applicants. So since it looks like you really don't care where you get in, as long as you are in somewhere, Penn would probably be the best bet.

Anyway, do the other EA Chicago applicants a favor and don't apply if you really don't want to do the work once you get to Chicago -- it's not fair to the kids who are more than willing to work hard for their grades. Your stats and EC's will get you into plenty of excellent colleges. (But thanks for posting in such detail here -- if you do apply to Chicago, I'm sure that Libby will be able to recognize you from your ECs & accomplishments, and it will help the ad com tremendously in making their decision to know that you are looking for an early admission to a school with rampant grade inflation so you can relax and party for the rest of your senior year).

Also, keep in mind that ED is binding-- if you get into Penn or whichever ED school you choose, you need to immediately withdraw all other apps. Also, an ED admission can be revoked if your final grades slip too much, so if you are thinking you can slack off the rest of your senior year once you have an admission in hand, think again.

Thanks for your opinions! : )

Well, I want to go to Chicago! It's one of the best universities in the world... But , obviously every university has its faults. If you combine Stanford grade inflation with University of Chicago, you have the perfect school! If I didn't like Chicago I wouldn't bother applying there. I also heard it has the best economics department in the nation, which i'm doing. The thign is, I care about where I go ED, but between Penn, Columbia, or Princeton to me it's all the same.

how much emphasis does chicago put on ec's?

Between Penn, Columbia or Princeton I'm pretty sure you will get the biggest admissions boost by applying ED to Penn. So based on your stated goals, I think that's where you should apply. And I think you should give the whole process more thought -- it sounds like you have considered prestige and reputation, but haven't really focused on what would be the best fit for you and your interests.

Your very well informed! Wow! well the thing is... obviously there are more things to think about, but aren't as important like:

cool buildings
Cute girls/guys
Safety/security/nightlife fun

I mean I am really looking at Columbia, yet look at my rank for grades 9-11... Princeton is different because they take out freshman year and I really mesed up freshman year! : (

hopefully Columbia will look more closely at 10-12 grades

yet, for sure Chicago is a must! guess I can live with deflated grades, I heard U o C law school is top 10 so maybe they'll understand!

I will leave it to Libby to answer questions about Chicago admissions -- I only answered here because you were asking questions about other schools. I still think you should spend more time thinking about fit -- obviously all the schools on your list have strong academics, and any one of them would be fine for pre-law. So it IS important to look at other aspects, such as social life, athletics, ec's, nightlife, etc. to find a school where you will be happy both in class and out. Try to narrow your list down based on those fit factors (your list is much longer than it has to be right now). I assume that you are a California resident and the UC system is a safety for you; with that in mind I would suggest that you narrow the rest of your list down to about 6 colleges. At the most selective colleges, sometimes the most significant part of your applicatioin is what you write in the "why this college" section... so spend time thinking and focusing about what each college offers you, and what you have to offer the college.

Is IB preffered over dual-enrollment at CC at UChicago? I don't have math (as well as English :\ in 12th ) for 11th/12th grades so I have to either enroll in dual-enrollment or transfer to another school for IB -- I won't survive much without math in school :( I see both options as challenging and both having advantages.

Maybe it's better to just, you know, take some classes with bad grades off to keep advantage of classes you did well in?

Thanks! you were very helpful.... well I guess I need to know how much time will I be spending outside the classroom? In college is there a lot of free time? I know it depends on the amount of classes you take ( i'll be probably taking 3 a quarter). well obviously I chose Penn, Columbia, Chicago because I love metropolitan cities ( as I assume most do)... I do hope the nightlife is great inside and outside of campus! : )

I really don't have much I can offer the school that nobody else can't. I guess the only thing is ehtnic , background, and my diversity as a person

i'm young and unexperienced! I have no idea , but for sure I know I want to do international affairs/law.

thats what I do! unique, huh? I guess this is the only unique thing that most applicants don't have... well including some of my ec's of course! : )

thanks calmom!

hey! mr . chipset! Can you rate my chances! It's the above post! I'm sorry that I'm including my stats on this thread which is wrong, but it seems nobody is talking so I just wanted to start some conversation! : )

yay!
mr. chipset are you allowed to do that?! I mean as you can see from my stats above... I did horrible freshman year, so if even some clleges take freshma year out, it'll be great

look at the difference in gpa and class rank from 9-12 and 10-12 -.-

Skymall935, well, assuming that UChicago doesn't fit you by this parameter

I can't see why you should apply if you don't like school.
In this case your chance is about 0.00001%, just in case if UChicago will send you a personal invitation and you will accept it.

I'll have to say it again : (

Chicago is a perfect school , except for the grade deflation. Even then, I don't know if grade deflation will ruin my chances for law schools. Maybe Chicago law school will understand the rigor of undergrad Chicago?

every school has its bad points. Btw I love Chicago and I wouldn't ask for my chances if I wouldn't bother applying there. It's on the top of my list as it should be for everyone! Yay!

I think I have a 20 % chance for EA decision...

Maybe you can really tell me what percent chance...

I really care for opinions, but this is kind of criticism.: (

Maybe you can just tell me my chances?

People say Chicago is a socially dead school, but I've heard some of the most intelligent, party- hard, down-to-earth, students go there. AND THATS why I want to go there. How far is downtown Chicago from the University?

hey chipset! Do you think this is unique?

[/quote]

In distance, approximately 8 miles. In time, anywhere from 20 minutes at best to an hour at worst. It varies with traffic, bus/train delays, etc.

Does everyone not realize the purpose of this thread!
