Watch out, it's an admissions counselor!

Calmom – the SF bay area last year was a mess. We’re currently looking for a new chair, and hopefully more interviews will be completed there. We let ASC chairs have a pretty large amount of autonomy, and that can sometimes mean that all interviews are completed in an organized fashion, or that none are.

Interviews are both evaluative and informative. With alumni, they can last about an hour. In our office, they are about 30 or 45 minutes. We do not prioritize interview scheduling, because applicants do the scheduling themselves. Also, you do not have to apply first, and you are under no obligation to apply if you have had an interview. The interviewer has not read the application before the interview, and in the case of an alumni interview, will not read it afterward.

TeriAnn – I have to say that ECs are very much overvalued in the media and on this discussion board. We just want you to be doing something that you like, which is not sitting on the couch. That can take any number of forms, from taking care of your little brother, to writing a political blog, to starting the pro-life league of San Jose. We do notice the “serial joiners” who do way more activities in their senior year than ever before.

me.duh – As I said before, I can’t say without seeing an application which part of it will be “weighted” more than any other. Your supplementary recommendations (and two are allowed) could be the most important pieces of the application.

Metonymy – No! Foreign language teachers cannot write the 3A recommendation.

Esperame – please read this incredibly confusing chart:

Oops, sorry about that. And thanks for answering. :)

Another question..sorry I forgot to add it with the last comment.

My school seems to have lost my transcript for geometry, which I took in 8th grade. I am currently taking calculus at our state university, and have been rigorously taking math courses all throughout high school.
Is there anything I can do to get that credit come short of retaking geometry?

Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread - it's so awesome to be directly talking to someone from U of C! I'm excited.

Anyway, I have a question...I know this may sound too specific, and I'm sorry if it is, but how does the University of Chicago view students who have failed classes? Have they ruined their chances?

Also (I know this is strange), is all the talk about Hyde Park and its dangers really true? I live in Glenview, and I've been to the city countless times, but I've never been to the U of C campus, so I have to admit that some of the crime stories are scaring me a little.

sous_lepontmirabeau - Why not come visit?

Honestly, the only people who would be afraid of Hyde Park are the people who are afraid of large Victorian-style homes with beautifully manicured gardens. Hyde Park is one of the safest neighborhoods in Chicago, even safer than the Magnificent Mile.

But, there's no accounting for taste.

As for failing classes, it depends on the class and the reason. Providing an explanation is a good idea.

me.duh - why do you need that geometry credit? We don't really need to see it.

What's the lowest score on the SAT, that you would accept at UChicago?

My score is low (below 2000), and I don't think it will raise significantly in October. I want to apply EA; and the only thing that's holding me down is this SAT score. :(

OHgiraffe - What is your real score? Chicago doesn't care about or even see the Writing portion.

sous - Hyde Park is a beautiful area. I used to go to a different college in Chicago, IIT. IIT is a terrible and unsafe area. One of the buildings you have class in is right next door to a project building. North and south of campus are projects, and east and west are terrible neighborhoods. Campus is about 12 square blocks. Hyde Park is not such a place. The campus is large and fully surrounded by the Hyde Park neighborhood, which is a safe and good place to be. Are there places near campus that are unsafe? Yes, as there are with any college in Chicago (including Loyola, IIT, UIC, DePaul, SXU, etc.) The important thing to remember about those places is that you really have no reason to go to them. When people talk about the areas around Chicago that are bad, you need to stop and wonder why you'd be at 69th and Stony Island or Garfield and King anyway. Libby's right, come visit - fall in love.

My score was.... this is super embarassing..... 1720. I planned to study this summer, and then be fully prepared for Oct. but then, I moved..... blah blah.

Yeah, 1720.

OHgiraffe: You're missing what I'm saying here. Chicago will see your out-of-1600 score. What is that? Add your verbal and math scores together. If you got a 200 on Writing and a 1520 overall, awesome. If not... less awesome. But there's no way anyone can comment on your SAT score unless you say what your (Math+Verbal) score is.

Sorry.

1200 even.

thanks for the link libby!

OHgiraffe - your chances are not shot. Here's a link though to the recent class of 2010 stats.

http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/level3.asp?id=377

As much as Chicago says they don't view test scores until the end (and I'll believe that) there is a correlation between high test scores and those that were admitted. The 1200-1290 range only accounted for 9% of those accepted. Just by statistical observation, you would probably increase your probability of acceptance if you could raise it above 1300. Good luck!

^ yes, I read that. Depressing. Oh well, I'm going to try my best. Thanks!

i know this will be repetitive, but i'm just confirming: i get general elective credits for my 4 in english comp. AP and my 5 in US History AP, right?
