It's all in the link Libby provided earlier: http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/pdf_07/exam-credit.pdf

For an alumni interview, does your request only get sent in once you submit the whole application? I really want an interview, but I want to take my time with my essays.

Hay, Libby, don't noe if u still remember me. I am the girl who has asked you whether you will come to Vancouver this year. Yeah, just trying to update myself here. Are you coming in the next few monthes? Besides, is there a real advantage of applying ED over RD? And if deferred, can we always update you guys with new information , such as new SAT score and etc? And how many deferred students actually become admitted in the end? THx very much~ lov ya.

Also for an alumni interview, is your request automatically activated when you tick the box 'i'm not living in the big Chicago region'? It makes me feel kinda insecure.. lol =)

The alumni interview request goes through once you make it, so you don't have to also submit your application.

mz16 - I am actually coming to Vancouver, and I'm going to come to Winston Churchill as well (I noticed a lot of interest from that school). Do you think that I should do interviews while I'm there? There are no alumni interviewers in Vancouver right now, but I was wondering if that was something Vancouverites would take advantage of.

viva0yue2006 - I'm not sure what box you're talking about.

Also, international applicants cannot apply EA if they are also applying for financial aid. So, that might put a damper on which way you can apply.

If deferred, we would love to see your new information.

Why is that?

Is there a way to find out if you have received a part of my app (a supplemental rec) prior to the date in October listed on the application site? I want to make sure it got there so I can quit worrying about it. If I e-mail someone would they tell me?

Hey Libby,

I play the violin. Is there a way I can schedule an audition with the music school, or do I just send in a recording via supplementary material? I really want to audition in person, and not be just another recording sent in with another application. I am so serious about attending U Chicago.

Chicago doesn't have a music school, so OHgiraffe should rethink plans.

It does have a music department, focused on musicology and music history. There is NO performance major or minor, for that matter no performance classes at U of C. It does have an orchestra with a conductor that is not to every player's taste, and is not renowned for its quality.

If you want performance, look elsewhere.

BTW, you can find a lot more details on the website.

I have to disagree with newmassdad about the orchestra not being renowned for its quality. I played cello for 10 years before coming to the university, around the country and around the world with different orchestras, and the University Symphony was THE BEST orchestra I ever played with. I'd have to say that Barbara Schubert's personality gets mixed reactions, but her conducting absolutely does not. She is very dedicated to the orchestra and to undergraduate music education. There are many opportunities for performance that musicians often cannot get if they study at a conservatory. In my first year, I was part of a chamber orchestra, I got to play in the pit orchestra with the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, and I was featured in many small recitals throughout the year. Just as a first-year, and I didn't even get into the University Symphony at that time. I'm still mooching off the resources at the music department as an alumna.

But, of course, you don't have to audition as a prospective student.

International financial aid -- because international financial aid is not need-blind, we need to see all international applicants for financial aid together, during one cycle. We can't really force them all to apply EA, so we need them to all apply RN.

Checking credentials -- in October, you should be able to click "check credentials" on the online application, and see what we have received.

If your application is incomplete past the deadline, you will get an email and have time to get your documents in.

Any advice on interviewing, or what to expect? Mine is in 3 weeks, and I'm extremely nervous. Even though I've already spoken to Colin Johnson. Also, how much does taking a summer session class help with admissions?

Hi Libby. The box I referred to is on the Request an Alumni interview page on the application website ' Check this box if you live outside the greater Chicago area, cannot visit campus, and would like an interview with a Chicago alumnus or alumna. ' .
I am not very sure how to make a request. Do we need to send E-mails to asc-questions@phoenix.uchicago.edu?
Thank you

Hey Libby.
I had one last question about the rigorous of the classes we take in highschool. In our school, we have something called a 'pass/fail' system where you can take one class pass fail/thus improving your gpa because the class is not counted within the system. I have not taken a class pass fail, but I asked my counselor about it and she recommends me not do it because it won't look good on my transcript to see a "P" (for pass) rather than an actual grade. How would Chicago view this scenario? Thanks!

ok i've received the confirmation mail for alumni interview. thank you~

I'm tired of answering questions about how much something will "help" or "hurt" with admissions. From now on, I'm just answering "5.0939094 percent."

We would rather see letter grades on your transcript than not; your counselor is right.

Don't worry about the interview. It's just a conversation.

Four questions Libby:

1.) For letters of reccomendation, I asked my tenth grade English teacher and my eleven and twelfth grade math teacher. Is it okay that I asked a tenth grade teacher? I think he knows me better than my eleventh grade teacher, and I enjoyed his class far more. If not, is it okay to ask a third teacher?

2.) At my school, only around 13 AP courses are offered. I will have 9 on my transcript by graduation; we are unble to take any before Junior year. Will I be compared to other students at different schools with 15+ Ap's by graduation?

3.) I named the University of Chicago as my number one choice on the NMSF packet of questions. Does this mena anything to you and other admissions officers, or do you only care about Finalist status?

4.) For essays, I focused on my passion for learning and thinking in general, not focused towards a specific field or major. Is that okay, or should I specifiy?

Thanks for any help!

Hey Libby! Thanks for hanging out and answering our questions! :D
For the supplemental recommendations, do they have to be by a teacher? I work part-time at a chiropractors office and I'd love to ask her for a rec.
