I just received my second semester grades at my current University. Should I inform someone at Chicago about the grades that I have received this semester? Also, can we expect Regular Notification(for transfers) to be sent out around the same time for Early Alternative(April 19th?) except in May? Thanks.

Hey Libby, thanks for all you're doing and the questions you answer. It helps a lot!

I'm a junior from Boston, and after reading that SATs dont play a huge role, does that mean GPAs are all the more important? Would a steadily increasing GPA and harder courseload carry some weight for mediocre fresh/soph grades? Is it a a very holistic approach, would you say?

I also read back in the beginning of this that suplemental stuff doesnt play a huge role. I was planning on sending in a very strong art portfolio as even though I hope to major in philosophy, I would still like to do some kind of art. Is it even really /worth/ sending in slides in a portfolio?

I've also read that the essays are an extremely important part of any UC app, do you feel the weight of the essays is actually as pronounced as it is rumored? Forgive me if you already answered this, I dont have the time to read 34 some pages right now lol.

thanks.
ryan

I can't answer your questions, but the quote below is from an earlier post on this thread by Libby.

"When people ask me questions about "weighting" one part of an application more than another, I think, do you weight page 6 of a novel more than page 7? The important parts are the important parts, and they will always stand out for us."

Libby, my child visited Chicago last fall and has since then emailed our area's admission rep (Mr. Bean). He/She wrote to Mr. Bean on a few times (re senior yr class selections, college entrance exams, Nat'l Merit, etc.) and has never received a response. Now he/she would like to pursue an admission interview. We so not live in Illinois, so we need some scheduling time. The high school counselor suggested going above his head and writing to the head of admissions.

Do you have any suggestions?

mom616- Chicago has a lot of information on their website about getting an interview. Usually it's very easy.

Just call to schedule an interview. As great an internet presence that Austin Bean and Libby have, they are not that good at returning emails. My child was in exactly your position last year, called, had the interview, fell in love, and the rest is history! Best of luck.

It looks like you guys are doing all the answering questions for me... at this point, I feel like there are really no new questions... they've all been asked before, somewhere.

If you want an interview, call the office. Counselors do not know how to book interviews.

What happens if my final grades are not sent in by July 1? I told my guidance counselor the deadline, but my school is not the best at adhering to deadlines.

Hey Libby, My son was accepted as a transfer student [Yaaa!] And we were wondering if you could divulge how many other transfer applicants were offered spots? Was it the usual # that the website mentions [approx 100, expecting 50 to accept] or less this year due to a higher than expected yield of freshman?

Libby, still wondering how we can get any response from Mr. Bean. Do you have any suggestions? Is there someone else we should be directing our questions to? We have already visited the campus. My child was so excited about the University and motivated to follow up on the visit with some remaining questions. Admissions' lack of response is negatively impacting this student's view. The other colleges contacted have been so responsive. It's just not what we expected from a school of this caliber. I can't imagine that it's due to the student's stats, either. They are well within any ranges we've seen for Chicago. I remained surprised and disappointed. Any helpful advise will be appreciated.

It's not my place to answer but------ please call the admissions office as Libby suggests. Every time my son called, he got the help he needed. I called once with with my own question and I was forwarded directly to an admissions officer. I hope this works for you, I'm sorry that your situation is so frustrating.

I second the suggestion that you just call the admissions office up directly and set up an interview. When my child applied we had no problem whatsoever doing this. The admissions office is friendly and efficient and we had a great experience last year. After the interview, the admissions officer contacted my child via e mail on many occasions and really helped to guide her, resulting in an admission and a wonderful first year.

Libby, I've looked at all 35 pages and I have a unique question.

Would it be a detriment to list Boy Scout involvement on your application if you decided not to go to Eagle Scout? I mean, all the way to Life then decided there was not enough time to make Eagle Scout (which might not make sense for those who are not well versed in Boy Scout deadlines).

Libby, We live overseas and my son, a rising senior, is planning on applying to U of Chicago. He will be at a summer precollege program this summer where U of C representatives go for the college fair. Is it possible to schedule an interview for him during that time? If not, how would that be done as we inderstand the interview is an important part of your app process? If we call the admissions office now, would it be worhtwhile without an application of file?

Yes, schedule an interview.

Will they interview him at the other college while in that city?

I just dropped my daughter off there yesterday for the summer course, too. She's a rising senior who is very interested in applying there for college.

Libby, could you let us know if it's possible to schedule her interview while she's there? It would be so helpful (we live in FL).

This board really isn't the best way to get specific info. Have your kids pick up the phone and dial 773-702-8650 (hope I got it right). It works.

This is the time of year when many admissions counselors are on vacation, don't know if this is the case with Libby, but it could be, so check back regularly, she will eventually reply. As for interviews, I believe one can simply call the admissions office and ask to schedule one.

I'll tell my daughter to call admissions and try to set it up.
