What are some good ECs one can partake in to convince a college that he or she is a leader?

Varsity Captain of a winning, awarded team
Regional/State Organization Officer (like Model UN, Student Council, etc.)
Club founder
Club president
Raising a substantial amount of money in a fundraiser organized by you
Creating a non-profit service/organization (hotline, low-priced babysitting for low-income families, etc.)
Tutoring/teaching for little or no money

The standard advice is to join something that you LIKE, then participate actively, and volunteer for or run for office in that group as you advance- junior year would be ideal. That said, many people are playing games with this due to the competitiveness of college admissions. Many kids start an EC and name themselves president. Or start a community service project and do the same thing. If they go to hyper-competitive schools, they try to gain recognition in a group or activity outside of the school. They launch a business on Ebay or something like that. Pick a cause and launch a fundraiser with themselves as the leader. If your school is not supercompetitive, and you are a pretty good student and fairly well-known there, you should be able to take the traditional route though.
