"We actively recruit lower-income students to come to Yale" -- Dean Brenzel

“I have often wondered if, in their search for diamonds in the rough, they pass up diamonds that are well-polished, well-displayed and ready to be picked. I figure the logic would be, those polished diamonds will be picked up by someone or the other.”

I think that’s exactly the logic. It also is the reality for us alumni interviewers. Knowing the crushing odds, I logically expect everyone of my students to be rejected, every year (even though I’m definitely involved and advocated appropriately). Now I know some will be accepted here and there – but I’m also certain that these students will go on to have spectacular college careers, Yale or not.

the low income students I know who are applying to Yale are hardly “diamonds in the rough”
The one kid is a urm, a first generation college student with top courses, top grades and scores and state level ECs. Even with an income under 15,000 her chances are probably not that great. Her brother, with similar stats was waitlisted.
