Florida universities fear losing top researchers, grants - South Florida - MiamiHerald.com

Correction the SUS is broke, whereas UF will pull out of this okay. This is all smoke and mirrors, and notice that we have already raised almost $800 million for our current Capital Campaign. In addition our endowment only lost 10% of the overall value - whereas Harvard & Yale lost over 30% of their overall values. We have a very conservative investing strategy and when this national economic crisis becomes okay in 2010, UF will be in a much stronger position in comparison to the other universities in the Top-Tier. Mark it down...

The return of SSobick. I am marking it down.

Interesting prediction SSobick. Hope you're right

It all comes down to endowments and funding formulas. Public Institutions are forced to take far too many students, but they do also get state appropriations to make up for this factor. So, YES - UF is losing some of their state appropriations, and YES they lost millions from their endowment, but in the long term our problems aren't as bad as most. We invested wisely and in this disasterous economic climate our endowment has done amazing.

The important thing to note here is that the ENTIRE U.S. economy is going down the toilet. Florida was kind of ahead of the pack in that we felt the pinch a year earlier, however everyone is starting to take it in the shorts. By the middle of 2010 things should start to become more stable.

Right now we are actually lucky to have such reasonbile tuition rates. Whereas these Private Institutions are going to have a hell of a time convincing parets to pay their rates when they have lost half of their portfolios.
