My daughter is pretty dead set against Oberlin, despite it being a great cultural match for her, due to a story going around school about a recent visit.

A friend of hers was on a group tour of campus and the tour guide singled her out and said something to the effect of: "ooohhh, you should probably take your sunglasses off- we don't wear sunglasses here". It was really sunny and sunglasses were definitely called for, but the girl said "we just squint".

I guess the idea was that the kids there see sunglasses as being "poser" or something like that. I told her i thought the story was apocryphal, but she swears she heard it from the prospective student's mouth.

Is this a thing at Oberlin? Is this kind of "we don't do X" at Oberlin a theme? Or was the tour guide maybe just having a little fun at someone's expense?

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Someone’s pulling someone’s leg. And I’d bet it wasn’t the tourguide.

I agree with dave47, very ridiculous. The tour guide was probably was just trying to make a joke, maybe it’s even an inside joke with their friends and they didn’t realize that the other students wouldn’t find it funny. Either way, a lot of people wear sunglasses. I think the college run flickr account provides a great look into Oberlin, and just looking at the most recent pictures (commencement), I see a lot of people wearing sunglasses, even with their caps that would provide a little bit of shade! Hopefully you can convince your daughter to give Oberlin a second chance!

My D was a tourguide at Oberlin for 3 years and she is a sunglass addict. Unfortunately the weather in Oberlin does not always require sunglasses. Oberlin is an awesome school.
