Why don't we as a country spend more money on solar and wind energy. Its only a couple cents more per kW, but when you consider the political and economic factors it is much less expensive.

I agree with you

well you then have these big turbine things all around the country, I am much more in favor of Nuclear Power. It does not degrade the look of our country and its quite clean, thogh we have to deal with the waste, thats something that should be like sent to some island someplace.

Yeah but wind and solar power are MORE clean...there's virtually no pollution except for the fact that the windmills are ugly. Like you can put solar panels on tops of houses and they would look perfectly fine.

Solar and wind is just about the cleanest you can get.

I agree that nuclear power is much better than burning oil, but why do either when we have technology that is much more beneficial to us.
Its not like nuclear power plants are all that good to look at

If houses started to come standard with solar roofs we would be totally independent on the electricity we use.

Everyone needs to do something.

Windmills do have their downsides. Google on "windmill birds" for two or three million hits on wind energy avian slaughter.

^ that's true, and unfortunately nothing is perfect.

Animals can’t catch a break

Sea life has its oil spills
Birds have their windmills
Three eyed frogs have their nuclear plants

We need more solar wind? :D

That would be tough to harness into energy chaos theory. perhaps if we channeled a comet's gas/dust tail (which is created by solar wind) into some sort of chamber we could harness its energy!

You and I will get on it right a way!

Yes, that would work. Let us begin! :D

Who cares? The sun is going to blow up the Earth anyway. (even though we'd die out long before then.)

you know Jman... that's pretty depressing.

I haven't thought about in a while, but what would you do if you knew life on Earth was doomed in your lifetime? Right now we hope that technology can make it possible to send us elsewhere in the universe before this happens, but what if we can't? Everything we've ever done would be for nothing. Our history would be erased. Everything would be gone since from what I understand our star will blow up and probably engulf us.

That sucks...

And it's much easier to use nuclear power. And the waste isn't too bad if you handle it correctly (not juust dump it). Also, it's far better than oil...

I'm for nuclear. Although I think everyone should have solar panels on their houses (I know I'll want to build a house when I'm older and will have one). Then electricity companies would be screwed though...

IMO, we're only prolonging our life on Earth by trying to be more environmentally friendly...not that that's a bad thing.

But why not look for other places to live, like Mars?

Either way, I'm never going to see what happens. I'll die while everything is still good. :)

The electric companies give tons of $ in rebates if you install solar panels

So that's your motto? As long as you die before everything goes in the crapper there is not point to try and fix things? Now, I know that your just joking around, but many people who are against environmental legislation feel this way, which is ridiculous. And that's part of the problem.

To do solar and wind on the scale of multiple nuclear plants would be hilarious.

That would be a lot of dead birds.

The dirty little secret of solar is the water polution from the plating operations necessary to create today's photovoltaic cells. They are not cheap or clean things to make.

Actually geothermal (see stories about Iceland generating excess geothermal and using it to create hydrogen to run vehicles) is about as clean as you get without affecting the ecosystem. It basically takes advantage of hot spots near the earth's surface to heat water to run turbines. No ecosystems affected. Hydro tends to vary the dynamics of rivers especially the flow of salt/fresh water at transition ecosystems, but other than that, not a bad compromise.

If you would like to spend the extra 2 cents per KWh, many utilities offer "green power" which is their way of funding the extra costs of obtaining wind/solar/biomass energy. No, your home is not directly wired to these places, but extra electricity from these sources are purchased and added to the grid.
