The experts over at EphBlog have done the math. Williams has squeeked out a narrow win over Middlebury for their ninth consecutive NCAA III Directors Cup award to the school amassing the most national championship athletics points. Twelve out of the thirteen years the Cup has been awarded.

Congratulations to all Eph Athletes and coaches!
I know Mid's SB team is on the rise and the competition overall is improving from all teams in NESCAC, and DIII, too.

What happened the one year Williams didn't win ?

Someone probably drank a little too much before their championship game. Or something.

But in any case, whoop!

Pretty good for a school that doesn't emphasize athletics in admissions.

In 1997-98 (the third year that the Division III cup was awarded), the cup was won by UC San Diego. The College of New Jersey and SUNY-Cortland tied for second/third, and Williams and Middlebury tied for fourth/fifth.

UCSD subsequently moved up to NCAA Division II, so they are no longer a cup rival.

Of the remaining Division III schools, Middlebury and The College of New Jersey have been the most consistent contenders. Midd has been #2 four times, and #3 twice. TCNJ has been #2 three times, and #3 five times.
