How does the weather affect students in chicago?
You meant the Chicago Winter.
It does not affect too much Student’s daily activities though it feels cold if you walk too long.
My D was not used to the cold of Chicago’s caliber before she went there. She says it is OK in general: classes, extra, going to the city, sports, etc. Occasionally she complains it is too cold and windy.
Probably you have already known its campus is not too small but not too big either. You can walk from anywhere to anywhere in 15 minutes. There are several buses running frequently in Hyde Park neighborhood. It is safe and warm to take buses in the evening. Depending on where you live going to dinning halls may be a small issue - especially on the weekends if your purpose of going out is solely for food.
Buy some warm clothes and use buses frequently and you shoud be fine.
It depends a lot on where you’re coming from and what you’re used too. We’re from northern New England so my son hasn’t found the winter weather (so far at least!) very different from home. I suppose the biggest affect is that students don’t linger / hang out outside as much as in nicer weather. Buses are a good option and fortunately the campus isn’t enormous; getting from one place to another is a fairly short walk.
We live in a warm climate and DS’s first winter in Chicago there was a major blizzard-- cars trapped in snow on Lake Shore Drive for hours, etc. Didn’t seem to bother the students at all. They had snowball fights followed by hot chocolate in the dining hall. I visited last March. There was still snow on the ground, and I thought it was pretty nippy. However, a surprising number of students were walking around in shorts. Apparently they get used to it.
It has got some severe winter blizzard the past couple of days. The school is still open only some classes got cancelled because teacher could not come. Otherwise it is normal.
If anybody wants to see what it looks like try the webcams. It’s only a few views and some are not on all the time but they are live::
Very cool! I did not know it.
I was just watching a few students were waiting for bus in front of the Reg and had boarded.
