From everything I’ve read that you typed, if Carleton is indeed affordable for your parents, go there. Your heart is there.
If it’s not affordable for your parents, seriously consider finding a less expensive love. You wouldn’t feel good about yourself later if they’re struggling in retirement (or can’t retire). Do some investigating on cost to you (NPC) and what they can comfortably afford. Do you have siblings? If so, factor that in.
Regarding the source up-topic, it appears to consider that certain colleges have special relationships with highly regarded medical schools. Carleton premed students, for example, receive consideration for the University of Rochester School of Medicine’s early assurance program:
I never knew anything different, but I liked the trimester system. It felt like the “right” number of classes per year and the “right” amount of time spent on each to me. I also really appreciated the long winter break, particularly coming from out of state.
That 363 in 2020 is more than one graduating class from WashU right? I don’t know if you can do a direct 420 to 363 comparison, it it’s 2 classes say or even 1.5, it becomes 630 to 363, which is a decent amount of attrition. This happens at all colleges though so it’s not just WashU .
That would be really good because there’s some weed out from the freshman stem classes - Calc, Chem, Physics before orgo at most schools. Maybe each one is not weed out on its own, but taken together in a college setting is usually challenging. I think the 20% numbers is very reasonable, some of the student surveys show that 20% or so are interested in pre-med.
Hey! So after lots of indecision, I ended up RDing to WashU…and was rejected. I was accepted to Carleton and Emory Oxford…but am also strongly considering Wheaton College (IL). I don’t know very much about Emory Oxford and am wondering if I should have denoted Emory College over Oxford with priority.
Anyway, if anyone has any more thoughts, feel free to share, and thanks again for all the great feedback thus far!
ALSO…Should I close this thread or keep it open for others’ sakes/more posts?
Friends DS went to Emory Oxford from out of state. Found it to be a suitcase school where lots of local kids went home on weekends. Not much campus life. I’ve heard great things about Carleton from another friend’s DD.
What do the finances look like? Wheaton sounds like it might be at a lower cost (merit?), but it’s also a religious school—are you comfortable with that?
Ironically, although Wheaton is conservative today, it was founded by an abolitionist, was a stop on the Underground Railroad, educated one of the first black college graduates in Illinois, and was the first college in Illinois to provide higher education for women.
On that topic (not to veer the thread away from OP), Hillsdale College was also “one of the first colleges to prohibit any discrimination based on race, religion, or sex; and it became an early force for the abolition of slavery. It was also the second college in the nation to grant four-year liberal arts degrees to women.”
An interesting topic. Maybe it’s worth starting a thread about.
