Something does apparently add up in the weighted GPA calculations- or maybe I am missing something. On UC Berkeley's admitted Freshmen profile page, they say the weighted GPA is 4.39. Now, since they consider only 10th and 11th grade courses, say a student took 6 courses in each of the four semesters, and got an A in all of those, the unweighted GPA is 4.0. They then allow upto 8 "semesters", or 8 points, to be added to calculate the weighted GPA. Doing the calculations, the maximum weighted GPA can only be 4.33 (for 6 courses/sem). If the student takes 5 courses/semester, then the max weighted GPA can only e 4.38! What am I missing here?

UCB also does fully weighted (based on their criteria), so that is why the average is 4.39.

Thanks, makes sense. (Ofcourse, I had meant to say “Something doesn’t apparently add up…”).

However, reading their website, they clearly seem to indicate they consider only capped weighted GPA, which is misleading. <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors;

The figure you quote must be uncapped weighted GPA. The website is very confusing. Of course you can call or email admissions to confirm if you have the patience to await a response.
