This guy at my school got into Brown and Dartmouth, but waitlisted at University of Maryland-College Park (we’re in-state and he had a 1560 SAT). I don’t know how that would happen, although he’s a bit of a slacker, but maybe that was senioritis lol. Another got rejected from CP but accepted to Carnegie Mellon. Does anyone else have kids with some weird admissions, i.e. accepted to top school bur rejected at lower tier.

It's called Tufts Syndrome. Lower ranked schools decline to admit high quality students who they know will not accept admission because it boosts their yield.

hrmm? I've seen the term "tufts syndrome" thrown around on CC but never heard it before. Did Tufts originally do this or something?

It's called Tufts Syndrome because it's absurdly common to see kids get accepted to HYPSMC but not Tufts.

Tufts is a great school by itself and is ranked #28, but it is located outside Boston. For a couple of decades, people would apply to the Ivy League schools and then use Tufts as a safety. It isn't like that now since the ultra selectivity has extended downwards so that it includes Tufts. I live in Maryland and UMCP used to be a safety school for everybody. It isn't like that anymore and is reasonably hard to get into. 50% SAT ranges are V 570-670 and M 600-700.

so THATS why i didnt get into a lot of schools...tufts sydrome! of course! =)
