Hello everyone,
Lately, I have been thinking about an essay topic. I thought of the most obvious one, but I don’t know if college admissions will find it weird or disturbing.
During the second half of freshman year, I got a group of friends to help me create a mock “high school musical” in which we would all break out into song at random moments throughout the day. Everyone loved it and now an entire school of 2000+ students break out into song daily. When I have free time, I like to write up songs and send them to my friends. We just start singing when the time is right and it has made the school an amazing environment. I asked my girlfriend out through a song and she accepted through the same song; I organized my lunch period to sing a song about how we felt about the lunch for that day; I even got cut from the basketball team through song (some of the adults enjoy singing with us) and I expressed my sadness through a song. We all enjoy coming to school just so that we can all sing.
I will admit that while it seems extremely weird, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have seen an overall decrease in bullying and students in detention. Teachers and other staff are now accustomed to this unusual style of school and now accept it. As long as we do not disrupt class, which occurred for a little while last year, but stopped, we are permitted to express ourselves through song.
Should I write about it?
@bodangles I don’t think it’s disturbing, but school visitors and new students are often disturbed.
I think it’s hilarious and if properly executed could be an awesome essay.
I think the idea sounds amazing! It’s certainly memorable and different, so if you can pull it off go for it!
I think it’s a really good idea! If I were you, I would focus more on how it brought down bullying and improved the atmosphere of your school
I think it’s so joyful that most admissions readers would decide you’re someone they’d love to have in their community. Work on presenting it in the most colorful, creative way possible, and ask some people from your school to review the essay first. I love it, and would have loved to attend school with people like you and your friends.
Please do explain the disturbing part. Enighten us.
It is a delightful story but ‘farfetched’ was a good. It may be hard to be convincing. Also saying bullying/detention is lowered sounds a bit self congratulatory and rather anecdotal.
Agree - what is disturbing about that?
(and I hated HSM and its sequels)
Seems like school spirit to me. More light opera perhaps than HSM.
I love the idea (and I think you need to include a song in your essay as an example!) Sounds creative, witty, clever, inclusive and all kinds of good qualities that schools are always on the look-out for.
I think it would be a hoot to read if you write it properly. Definitely has potential to be a standout essay. (you should include some sample lyrics) I also like the decreased bullying/more cheerful school angle.
Is this from the manifesto of one of high school musical’s writers?
If OP is the reason his school now breaks out into song daily resulting in a drop in bullying and detention, surely at least one, if not all of his LORs from people associated with his school would mention it, no?
