I have a very absurd/somewhat weird common app essay that I used in my application. And when I mean weird, I mean WEIRD. I’ve heard people say colleges are looking for unique essays, but is having an odd, light-hearted piece a good idea or not? If anyone has any past experience with something like this, I can message my story to you. I might be overreacting, but I was just wondering because I want to know if I made the right decision or not by writing about such unordinary topics.
I wrote a bit of an odd common app essay. My first paragraph rhymed and was very lighthearted. It didn’t stop NJIT from offering me free tuition and a stipend. I was put on the Georgia Tech early action (decision?) wait list however. I’ll know on March 15th whether or not they truly didn’t like it…
I’m not a college admissions counselor so I really wouldn’t know. I would play on the safer side if it was me. Suck it up and rewrite. You’ll probably look back and be glad you didn’t use it.
Hey! I am in a very similar situation…My common app essay subject matter isn’t too weird per-se (it’s about me getting lost on public transportation) but its format is very unique, and each passage is separated by a surrealist quote. I truly believe that if your voice is unique, and your writing is clean and creative, you will be just fine.
I personally haven’t heard from many places yet, but have been accepted into two universities that evaluated my “weird” essay. Good luck!
me too lol (for the curiosity)
did you talk about poop? analyzed its texture or something? (i almost made a pun, but i think there’s a language filter on here…)
@otoribashi ACTUALLY, my first essay topic was about my fear of public restrooms so I did sort of. But I had to change it cuz my college counselor didn’t really like it.
