Weirdly Specific School request - CS and Humanities program?

Hi im new to the forum so if im missing anything just tell me.
Right now Im intending on transferring from my current school because I realized that I did not want to do engineering in the end and that is the only thing that my current school that is strong. I also did not like the large public university setting and would prefer a smaller school (preferably in an urban setting but im not too location picky) I am more passionate for humanities and philosophy, but I also care about Computer science because I feel that I can work very proficiently with programming and graaphics. Does anyone know any school that offer something like a joint degree with computer science and humanities/philosophy.

Plenty of LACs will allow you to dual major CS and a humanities topic. Doing so and still graduating within 4 years is another matter - that will depend on the course requirements for each majors and how many electives you can take that will count towards both majors. Look at the CS and philosophy course requirements for a school you’re interested in and see what it would entail and whether it’s realistic. If you want to grad in 4 years, a CS major with a minor in phil is more realistic.

Typically a CS degree from a LAC will be a BA, rather than a BS. This means that there are fewer course requirements for the CS degree, and more room to take classes in other fields. It’s typically much easier to double-major with BA programs (as opposed to BS programs). At some LACs, around 30-40% of students graduate with double-major BAs, and they typically do it in four years.

Sometimes large universities offer CS as a BA program in the School of Arts & Sciences, and in that case the double-major BA route could also be feasible. For example, the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University (in Ohio) has a well established double-major BA in CS and Philosophy.

People can better help if you let us know how much you can pay, what year you are currently in school, and what your current GPA is. Your high school GPA and test scores might also be helpful.

There is an emerging interdisciplinary field called “Digital Humanities” you might want to look into:

A field called GIS can also sit at the intersection of computer graphics and the humanities. Likewise for the field of Computer Visualization

Cognitive Science is a field that can involve both Philosophy and Computer Science.

Best of Luck!

You should check out Northeastern - great CS program which offers combined degrees with Philosophy, Sociology, English, History, Criminal Justice, and more. Right in Boston, so urban, check. Not small, but not huge and towering.

LAC’s are a good place to find the humanities and course mix, but be careful to vet the program offerings carefully, particularly given that you’re interested in graphics, which may not even be offered at some LAC’s. Also look for colleges with CS+X programs, which would allow for similar results as Northeastern.

Here is a good resource on LAC offerings: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/math-computer-science-majors/1814245-computer-science-at-some-smaller-schools-including-liberal-arts-colleges-p1.html

Thanks for letting me know @Otterma. And thanks to everyone for the recommendation it has really helped in my college search! Also thank you @Mastadon for the extra tip for Cognitive Science!

You can double major in computer science and a humanities major just about anywhere. It doesn’t have to be an LAC, although that’s a good place to do it - but even Stanford offers lots of joint majors in CS and the humanities.

Also, the differences between a BA and a BS only exist at schools that offer both. You can’t compare a BA at one school to a BS from another school and universally say the BA has fewer courses - some schools are only accredited to offer BAs and thus offer them in every field, for example. Instead of paying attention to the letters, take a look at the course catalog and see what the requirements are.
