I'm a Northfield townie and went to the open house for the Weitz Center for Creativity this afternoon. The Weitz was last used as Northfield's Middle School. Prior to that, it was the high school.

Carleton should be very proud to have such a fine facility-- and what a great way to reuse a building. I especially appreciated how the auditorium had been reworked into a multipurpose 250 seat theater and a separate 250 seat cinema. The old wood shop was reworked into a very impressive "Idealab" outfitted with the most Apple equipment I've ever seen in one place.

I also appreciated the thoughtfulness of the Carleton community to invite townies to see what was done with their old school. I walked behind a group of retired school teachers who were marveling and pointing out which classroom was whose...

Well done, Carleton.

Here's a link to some photos. I don't think the photos quite do it justice:

Visiting Carleton with my daughter in two weeks and, as a theater and dance lover, I can’t tell you how excited she is that the gleaming new Weitz Center is open for business! One thing I’ve been wondering: is it close enough to the rest of campus that getting there won’t be a punishing hike in the middle of February?

It’s just a couple of blocks from the dorm Musser, but it could be a chilly hike if you lived on the other side of campus. It’s already on the campus map: [Carleton College: Campus Map](http://apps.carleton.edu/map/)

I wish it had been open when I was on campus a couple of weeks ago, especially now that I know the history of the building.

Yup, just 2 blocks from campus, almost next door to the President’s house. If you still see this as a winter trek, rest assured it’s the closest campus building to town and, depending on your warm-me-up of choice, Goodbye Blue Monday or Tea Creations :)
