Our “brief” outage this morning took longer than expected. The good news is that the CC forum servers are all in their final locations, are connected at gigabit speed, and are providing really fast page loads.
The servers were up early this afternoon, but the IP address (sort of a “street address” that tells other computers where to find the forum) of the main forum server changed. Rather inept management at the datacenter where the main [College</a> Confidential](<a href=“http://www.collegeconfidential.com/]College”>http://www.collegeconfidential.com/) server is located delayed letting the rest of the Internet know about the new forum address. We implemented a backup source of address info, and now it appears that the change is propagating around the Web.
It’s a bit confusing, because there are lots of “address books” on the Web. Your own computer remembers addresses, your ISP remembers them, and there are some “master address book” computers around the Web, too. While we took some steps in advance to cut down the time to update all these computers, sometimes it’s hit and miss. So it’s possible that you might be able to see the CC Forum but a friend of yours might not. (That means that your ISP updated their address book more quickly.)
Thanks for your patience - I think we are done with upgrades for a while!!
