Members often ask where moderators come from. In general, the key criteria are a long history of helpful posting here at CC. Most have been here for a full year or more and have at least a thousand posts. By far the most important characteristic is a helpful and friendly personality - CC is a uniquely welcoming community, and our volunteer mods are a key factor in keeping it friendly. Topical knowledge is less critical, although many of our mods are indeed very knowledgeable about individual schools and the college process in general.
We expect that at CC new members will be welcomed, and that nobody will be mocked or flamed for asking a “dumb” question. Most of us were woefully ignorant when we began our college process, and we want CC to be a place where newbies with questions can interact with more experienced members and never feel out of place.
All of our members can help - if you spot a post with a link drop or ad, or that fails to meet CC standards for courtesy, just use the “report” link in the post to call it to the attention of our team. And, of course, when you post in a friendly and helpful way, you are extending the CC philosophy to those with whom you are conversing. Thanks to all!
