Welcome week and Moving-in

Evolving, do you know anything about commuters?

Sorry, FromJersey,

I am not clear what your question is. There was a little discussion not too long ago about the pros and cons of being a commuter at NYU for a student trying to decide between being a commuter at NYU vs. dorming at SUNY Binghampton.

Here is the link I referred to in the post above.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1128796-nyu-vs-binghamton.html?highlight=commuting+at+nyu</a></p>

Also, a thread with some commuter info I started previously:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1115803-nyu-commuters-some-info-consideration.html</a></p>

Thanks a lot! I’ve gone through those threads! Would you know anything about how life is for a commuter at NYU?

I was recently accepted off the waitlist and NYU had been my dream school, but now I need to make sure that I’m making the right decision. If you don’t mind me asking, how does your son like NYU, what is he majoring in? Has the experience been worth it for him?

Hi, I thought the second link offered some info re: commuters’ experiences as NYU students, as reported in the article in the link. I have no direct knowledge of what it is like to be a NYU commuter.

My S loves it at NYU (he lives in a NYU dorm) and aside from planning to study abroad in Shanghai junior year first semester, he does not want to leave NYU in NYC. He has thrived in the opportunities for learning, social interactions, fun and music outside of studies at NYU. He has a very musically-inclined part of him that is now blooming at NYU with the additional opportunities that are part of being in NYC. He has been doing music recording, planning and implementing gigs in various venues in NYC and NYU. He plans to do a summer internship to learn about management, technology, and networking issues in the music business.

Believe it or not, this is his “side” interest/ (serious) hobby. Academically, he is planning on pre-law with maybe double majors in History and East Asian Studies. He plans to be more active in the pre-law and mock trial team experiences in the coming years. He considers most NYU classes thus far to be worthwhile to help him think through academic issues and to be a better thinker overall.

I believe he would say there is no better school for him than NYU. Note that there are many NYU students who love NYU and its setting in NYC. For the right person, it is a “magical” place. However, if you are not a city person and an independent type who takes the initiative, life in NYC and NYU can be difficult. So the NYU/ NYC experience depends on your needs and your personality.

Thanks a lot! Is you son in CAS? I’m actually thinking somewhere in the pre-law field too. Do you know if NYU-undergrad is a feeder for the law school?

Thanks a lot! Is you son in CAS? I’m actually thinking somewhere in the pre-law field too. Do you know if NYU-undergrad is a feeder for the law school?

Many law/ graduate schools do not like to take people from their own undergrad programs, but, thankfully, NYU is not one of the schools known for this. Which means the law school will take students from NYU’s undergrad schools (without the negative bias that can be displayed elsewhere).

With that said, you will be competing with the top students from all schools (including Ivys) for a spot at NYU Law. It was ranked really high, something like #4 ranking above Columbia Law a year or two ago. It has now dropped in ranking to #5 or 6 below Columbia Law. Though that is still not bad for national rankings. I do not have the source readily available, but if you google, you will see the rankings for law schools nationally (if you have not done so already).

Yes, my son attends CAS and he was selected for the Mock Trial team, which is excellent;
it was the National Champion Team for 2009-2010. It is traditionally ranked high in national competitions.

By the way, FromJersey, I would recommend joining the NYU Undergrad Law Society from the get go if your interest is in law. My son was too busy to do so. It is a shame, but really, I guess something has to give. Can’t do it all in such an enriching environment. :)
