My family is on welfare and I recently got accepted to Columbia ED....Will I receive 100% financial aid? How much does one on welfare usually receive? And does financial aid cover tuition and room and board?

Thanks guys

Congrats on the ED! FA packages are determined on the aggregate need (which includes tuitions, room, board, supplies & books, and travel back and forth) and your demonstrated need. Of course, you should work towards outside scholarships as they will decrease any loan burden you might have to take.

Meeting 100% financial need will probably include Work Study, grants and loans. It's not a 100% free ride (nor should it be) but probably very doable.

Best of luck to you.

Shouldn't you have already received FA package especially since the deadline for accepting an ED decision has passed?

Since you are on welfare you fall in with Columbia's low income initiative which means you will have no loans.

Edit: based on your posts, you have not been accepted anywhere. You are hoping to be admitted to Columbia GS.

zebrastripes --

you posted on the 20th that you had applications pending to numerous colleges and yesterday you posted asking about the general studies programs at various schools and you said "no, I didn't apply to any ivies".

were you actually accepted into Columbia ED? Seems strange that every other one of your posts (all posted in the past 3 days) are about applications to school and what to do. Doesn't add up.

I heard Columbia was one of the top ten most expensive private schools in the nation... Not even me with my non welfare, lower middle class fee waiver application would apply there.

Well, my best friend is just like you. She is on welfare and she was accepted to NYU ED. They labeled her as a commuter student and her estimated tuition, fees books, transportation, and personal expenses are 41,000. They gave her a 22,000 scholarship, 16,500 in grants, and a 2,500 loan. So I dont know about room and board. How far do you live from NYC?

Your best friend was more than likely admitted through HEOP. Beinbg on welfare made her eligible for ful lpell ~ 4310 & full TAP ~5000. If NYU has SEOG funds, she would have been eligible for those also in addition to a few more $$ thrown in. the 2500 loan is subsidized so that she will not have to pay interest until graduation. All in all she got a good deal.

Oops!! Sorry guys! My other posts about the general college were posted by by sis. We share one account! lol Sorry for the mixup!

yeah, jus asked her, she did get admitted through HEOP. And i agree she did get a great deal, wish that was my financial package

Under the simplified needs test thing, if your family members have gotten AFDC (or food stamps, or WIC, or free/redced lunches) in the past year, your EFC is 0. Now, whether or not you'll get 100% of your need met, that's a different story. I can tell you that a number of schools at that level waive loans and workstudy for very low income students, such as those who qualify under simplified needs.

I think I read in another thread that Columbia waives loans for students with incomes (well, family incomes) under $40,000 or $50,000. I forget which, but I assume that if you're on welfare your income would be beneath either of them. Unfortunately, I have no answer to your EFC question, other than to say that Columbia says that they'll meet 100% of demonstrated need.

Call Columbia's FA office and speak to an FA counselor. If you haven't gotten your package yet, you need to follow up on it ASAP. It may have gotten lost in the mail. If it hasn't, an officer should be able to give you an idea of what's going on and why you haven't received it yet.

Have your sister get her own CC account. What you're doing now is confusing people, and you may miss out on some good advice because people will think your posts don't add up.

If you have already been accepted ED, why would you post on 1/20 that your identiy was stolen and you could not get your ACT scores to the school in addition to the following post.

this is separate from the inquiries for a gap year.

AS NSM stated you and your sister both need to have separate accounts. People try to help you in context of your situation. However, having 2/3/4 different stories (because of multiple users) makes it difficult to give you accurate information according to your situation.
