I didn't do as good as I had hope, but I will be retaking next year. I got an 1800 out of 2400. Does anyone know if this hurts my chances into getting a competitive school such as Harvard, MIT, Princeton, U Chicago, Georgetown, etc. even if I manage to get a 2300 next time I take it. Anyone know from experience or friends who initially got a low sat but managed to pull it up to 2300 and did or did not get into the school they wished to get into. I'm really worried and I know I can pull my score up dramatically if I spend the summer studying. So please can someone tell me if I should just look at other less competitive schools because of my initial low sat.

You should always include safeties and matches, and most of the schools you listed will not be either, no matter what your SAT score.

most schools superscore. including HYPetc. meaning after taking the SAT multiple times, your highest score in each section will be combined to your final score.
that number is essentially what most schools look at.
i also think that showing improvement is a possitive in the college application process.
don't lose hope yet. work hard and get the 2300.

johnsmithcollege - study hard and apply to a variety of colleges.

I know that I should apply to a variety of colleges but does that initial sat score hinder me from acceptance into a more competitive school. What will the colleges think of my initial low sat score?

what grade are you in?

When I say next year I will be retaking, I mean next school year and I'm and Junior

You probably won't be getting into Harvard, MIT, or Princeton with an 1800(unless you had a 1600/1600 for M+CR and a 200 for Writing) unless you have a HIGH GPA, high class rank, and are a very well rounded guy who is very much involved with school and outside activities like church, newspaper(editor), being a leader of various organizations, etc. I'm not the expert here, but you should pull that 1800 up to at least a 2100. Just focus on Math and CR though
