Well... I screwed up

Ok, so yesterday, I was caught for DUI.... I was out at a friends house and we got drunk, and I knew I should have just asked someone sober to drop me off, but I thought I was invincible and could not get caught. I did.

I'm not going to lie, it was entirely my fault. My parents are immensely upset, and I should have known better. Thankfully, i was not injured in any way, shape, or form. My main question is, how will this affect my college chances. I have applied to the top colleges (Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, all RD) Below I have included a quick backdrop on my stats

4.0 UW GPA, 4.58 Weighted----> likely to be saludictorian of my class of over 500

2350 SAT, 800 Math II, 800 Physics, 790 Chem

Intel STS Semi-Finalist

Captain of School's Tennis and Chess Teams

Varsity Tennis

Interned at an engineering firm for one summer

President of the Debate Club of my school

Won lots of awards for Science Olympiad and a couple for Debate

Executive Committee of Science Olympiad (I decide who is the on team, etc. )

Write for my School's Newspaper

I also have my own Charity that has raised over $1000

BTW I am Indian and my household income is over 750k

I realize what I have done was incredibly stupid, but is there any chance at all that I will be able to be admitted into any of these colleges. I did RD specifically so that I have freedom. Am I really going to be limited to a county college because of this?

This is my first post although I have spent countless hours snooping around these pages:)

bump, I really want advice

Ummmm… I don’t know. I’m not sure of the policies at these schools in regards to such things, but this certainly does look bad. These schools all reject over 90% of applicants, many of whom have stellar resumes and no baggage of any real sort. I would think that a DUI on your record very much makes you a less-than-desirable candidate. I don’t think your chances look too good right now, to be honest.

You almost have no chance at all at any of those schools. Hopefully you applied to your state flagship as they don’t care as much as privates do.

Yes, the combination of the already super competitive applicant pool and this DUI will drop your chances a lot, especially if you are underage (which I’m assuming you are).

Sadly, this will drop your chances A LOT, especially with the Ivys who care immensely about their schools’ reputation and how students represent them. I know someone at my school who got rescinded from Cornell last year because she got caught drunk at a school dance and suspended. Unfortunately, I think a DUI is even worse than that because it goes on your legal record (not too sure about this). Hopefully, you applied to some back-ups who might be more lenient about these type of things. Keep your head up and make sure not to make the same mistake again.

Dude that blows I am so sorry. Yea you are kinda screwed though.

You can’t be serious. You were drunk and driving and it’s a relief that only YOU didn’t get hurt? Just shows how insensitive you are. I sincerely hope you’re trolling, and if not screw you.

“I should have known better.”
That seems a gross understatement; I don’t think you’re ready for college, especially a rigorous undergraduate experience like MIT’s. There’s more you need to worry about than where you’re going to school.

Just something to consider, are they going to know that you got this DUI? I mean most of the top colleges like the ivies have already made their cuts and have their applicant pool narrowed down to like the top however much. You already submitted forms and aren’t submitting any more until AFTER you would be accepted… How will they know?

I agree with tpnels, you should have been more specific as to when you submitted your application, maybe they made their decision before you had that dui happened yesterday, your stats are very good, so im going to stay positive for you because they probably didn’t even get the notice for your dui thing, did they arrest you? what charges did they give you?
Either way goodluck, and im hoping the best for you because everyone makes mistake and deserves 2nd chances, and you seem like a REALLY hard working student.

Even if you were accepted to one of the various universities you listed, you will likely be denied admission. The prestige of attending these universities is immensely high. There are thousands if not-hundreds of thousands applicants ready to take your spot with the same or higher credentials. Harvard will simply not deal with minute law problems.

My suggestion: Turn your negative into a positive, and apply to your states flagship school.

You really blew it man.

Doesn’t the OP have to inform the schools about changes in disciplinary action/criminal behavior bc of the common app agreement?

@Poelstra13 that was mean, and no they won’t INSTANTLY deny him unless he sends in a letter to appeal and explain what happened, and I KNOW Harvard belives in second chances so it’s not completely over for him, they aren’t THAT strict… And plus he didn’t exactly say he was charged with DUI, if he did he would be in jail right now and not on a college forum site, DUH!!

I love how everyone is taking shots at this dude without giving an adequate response to his question.

OP, you done *****ed up. No one here needs to tell you that twice.

Look at each schools admission policy and see what they require when an applicant or admitted student is involved with the law. Show initiative by taking action and seeing what the right course of action is.

Best of luck, and hopefully you wont make such silly decisions like that again.

You better make an infinite loop that will recreate the bug bang and make a simulation of the whole universe if you want to compensate for what had happened

I said “bug” hahaha

Thanks for responding to this guy lol, I heard about this from my friend and I was not sure what to say to him

Does anyone know if you have to admit on the common app if you received a diversion?
