I’ve heard conflicting information about what colleges look for in extracurriculars. I know that dedication and leadership in activities is important, but I’m wondering whether a well rounded set of ecs or activities focused on a certain field is better. I’ve heard that colleges want well rounded students, but I’ve also heard that experts in a certain interest stand out and overall they are building a well rounded CLASS. My own ecs include multiple music activities, math and science organizations, and working with people with special needs. They aren’t focused on one field, but they are all things that I’m passionate about. Will this variety reflect well on my college applications and is one type of student (well rounded or focused on a single field) a better candidate?
Both paths are fine. I’ve heard admissions officers say that they seek to create a well rounded class – that does not mean that each individual is well rounded, but rather they want a mix of well rounded individuals and individuals who have more focused interests/talents. Do whatever works for you.
Colleges want a well-rounded class. Within the class, some students may themselves be well-rounded; others may be pointy.
Schools want applicants who are pursuing their passions in meaningful ways. If your EC’s reflect that, then great. But don’t do an EC with the thought that it will make you a better candidate/impress admissions. AO’s can see right through that.
I agree with previous responders. That being said, being a member of 6 different organizations is not even close to as valuable as holding leadership positions (VP, pres.) of 2 meaningful organizations in which you can display passion.
