Okay, Wellesley it is. She went to SOC and loved it. Once she was back at her biggish public school the advice she got from a couple of 17 year-olds was to go with football. After a TREMENDOUS amount of hand-wringing on all our parts, she is opting for the smaller academically-nurturing environment over a much larger, relatively anonymous school. Although we realize nothing is perfect, I hope this is right for her. I think and hope so.

I am glad your D had a better experience at the SOC. I am sure she will love her 4 years at Swellelsley…:)

You are right nothing is perfect, but it is less likely that you will go wrong with W.

Welcome to the Wellesley family… :)

I can’t help with the Facebook link, but here is a link to a discussion from a couple of years ago that includes a number of suggestions for things to bring, moving tips, etc.:

It’s an exciting time–enjoy it and don’t get stressed! We are looking at our DD’s last year at Wellesley next year and can’t believe how fast the past three years has gone.

^^ thanks a lot.

I went to Bed Bath Beyond last night and got the shopping list for Wellseley. I was told as long as we gave them one week ahead, the items we buy locally should be ready for us in the store near Wellesley. Here is the link to the service http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/registry/MovingSolution

txhandan - D came up from Texas two years ago and we did the BBB thing. That worked perfectly and in that Natick store, they also have many toiletries. We needed to hit Target for a few items also, but that was it. D brought too many clothes - 5 monster duffle bags worth and I had to return home with about half of what she brought. There was no room for it all and frankly, she didn’t need it all. At the end of her second-year, she plans to bring even more stuff home she doesn’t need.

I would recommend arriving Saturday before the Monday move-in. We opted for Sunday arrival and had bad weather delay our flights by 5 total hours (unusual but stuff can happen) and as a result, we arrived into Wellesley too late to go to BBB and Target so we, the parents, spent Monday doing the shopping while she unpacked her duffles, organized her room and went to all the events they had going on that day (we missed all but the parent athlete orientation).

At the end of the day Monday, we were all frazzled and exhausted and wished we had arrived Saturday so we were perfectly staged with all her things and would have only just been exhausted at day’s end.

@maidenMom, thanks a lot for the tips.

Thanks for the info.

I’m happy to be joining you as a first-year parent! My daughter committed on Friday after being admitted off the waitlist. She had just started to get excited about her Plan B school, and then Wellesley called. I have to say, in just a few days, we have all felt an outpouring of support from alumnae and all of the College staff. D will be coming to Wellesley sight-unseen (we live overseas) and it helps us to know that she will be in actively caring hands. Now she’s busy tackling this new-student checklist in the middle of IB exams! You can guess which she would prefer to do – it’s not distracting or anything! 8-|

@KSAMom
Congratulations. I am glad she got in to her first choice. I am sure the transition will be exciting for her, just as it is for the parents…:)

Which part of the world is she coming from?

@tamtiger
Thanks! We’re American but she has grown up in the Middle East since she was 7. We read that she may be able to attend the International Student Orientation (optional for U.S. Citizens coming from abroad). She’s thinking about doing that to help with her adjustment to life “back home.”

@KSAMom
Very nice. I am sure she is excited to be back home. She is coming in without seeing the campus. She is in for a very pleasant surprise. Academically she will do great, because of the IB system in the Middle east schools. I guess the only true adjustment will be the weather in Boston.

Do anyone know how the insurance works at Wellesley College? My work insurance will be able to cover my daughter when she is in Wellesley. However, the Wellesley Health Service is not a in-network provider. What is your experience with the Wellesley Health Service and insurance handling?

@txhandan

How are you? High school is almost over … [Today is the last day of High School for my D… she is very happy…:), and counting the days to move to Wellesley ]

If your personal insurance is not a PPO [ie HMO] then you should get the Wellesley offered insurance. I know the words PPO, HMO etc are confusing. The best thing to do is to call your insurance and ask them if you have coverage in other areas and out of net work. Some insurances will cover as along as the providers are in net work at 100%, as in if they accept Blue Cross Blue Shield then they will accept BCBS from your area [or Aetna, United etc]. But sometimes your specific work group or employer may have restricted this out of network coverage [or they may have been generous and provided this coverage for you].

It is confusing but better to call your insurance carrier, they will be best able to answer your question.

East coast schools had a lot of snow days to make up. My D was out of school at the end of May. :-)

Mine is Cigna PPO and I searched providers near W and none of providers are within walking distance. Two hospitals that Wellesley Health Service mentioned: MetorWest and Newton Wellesley, are in-network. So I am trying to decide whether to buy the Wellesely Insurance. I also called the University Health Plans and I was told that if my daughter has both insurances, the Cigna one would be the primary and all claims will be sent to Cigna and if denied, it can be submitted to University Health Plans.

@txhandan
Hi there… I spoke with Wellesley Health Service. If you do have a PPO [ as in Cigna or BCBS] you do not have to take the Uni Health Insurance [in most cases the student coverage is sub par than the regular insurance we carry].

There is no charge to see the University providers, so there is no bill [apparently they do not par with any insurance] for seeing a provider for any visit or illness. If they refer you to a local hospital or specialist then in most cases we will be covered. [provided the physician/hospital participates with our insurance, in most cases they do].

The only charge from the Uni Health Services will be for labs, medications, ancillary services such as crutches [if there is a fracture etc], and these can be submitted to the regular insurance through parents… [yipeee].

So if you do have a good PPO insurance then you do not need the Uni insurance. You also will not need a PCP because the Uni Health Service is kind of the PCP, and they will refer you to a local participating provider for further care.

@tamtiger, you are so helpful. I appreciate your reply greatly.

@txhandan, from what you’ve described, you don’t need to buy the Wellesley insurance for your D. We have a BCBS PPO and my D has needed to see in-network doctors in the Wellesley/Newton/Natick area. It’s cheaper to pay for a taxi twice a semester than to buy the Wellesley student insurance! Just fill out the online waiver form every year so the insurance charge is taken off your bill.

The campus health service is quite limited, actually. It’s fine for strep throat etc. but can’t really handle anything more, and chances are, your D will need to go off campus at some point for a health issue anyway over the course of four years, even if she had the university insurance plan.

@NJSue, thank you for your reply and sharing of your experience.

My husband is retired military so we have Tricare with a supplement, anyone have any experience with this at Wellesley?
