Wellesley or Haverford?

Factors important to me: overall student happiness, “feeder school” (I want to go to hbs), prestige
I’ve heard a lot of bad things about the poor impression of wellesley students despite how great the school is
I’m considering engineering and Haverford has an interesting program w UPenn (4+1)…
Any thoughts?

Both colleges are very strong academically.

From students I know at both schools, Wellesley attracts more type A students and has a competitive vibe. Haverford has an intellectual vibe but is more cooperative and less competitive in nature.

Will you be able to attend accepted student visits at both schools?

@doschicos‌ Yes I’m planning on going to both accepted students days next week. Does Haverford carry a lot of prestige?

Haverford carries 3498.475 metric tons of “prestige.”

You can go to a top business school from either, so don’t worry about that. Both Haverford and Wellesley carry prestige.

What things have you heard about Wellesley students that left a poor impression?

@juillet‌ just the fact that articles like this http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2006/2/22/the-girls-next-door-what-are/ exist

I am confused, @nerdforlifee12, you have another thread in which you are debating whether to go to UCLA or Rutgers or TCNJ.

Wait, wait, wait. You are basing your concerns on an 8 year old sensationalized article from a Harvard student publication?? Alrighty then.

Wellesley has engineering dual-degree programs with Olin (4-1) and MIT (3-2). I also think there is an engineering minor available.

obviously Wellesley.Wellesley has a significantly better financial aid package than Haverford.Out of all incoming freshmen who were eligible for financial aid, Wellesley offers incoming freshmen with 14% more financial aid support than Haverford.

LOL wellesley and haverford both come out to the same price for me: expensive

Speaking as someone who is having a hard time turning down Wellesley for Princeton, I’d definitely say Wellesley. From my friends who go to school in the area to the quality of Wellesley students that I personally know, Wellesley seems to be the more prestigious, and their grade deflation policy is definitely respected by the academic community. Every top grad program knows Wellesley and its course rigor! As a precaution, you just have to be prepared for some competition for A’s (mostly in 100- and 200-level classes).

Like @Akif50‌ said, W does have the superior endowment, so I’d recommend running the NPC if you haven’t already.

Based on what you want, Wellesley seems perfect!

the only thing i’m worried about for wellesley is the all girls thing…

I will repeat again… I am confused, @nerdforlifee12, you have another thread in which you are debating whether to go to UCLA or Rutgers or TCNJ.

Well, Wellesley students aren’t girls, they’re women :disagree:

But on a serious note, only you can decide whether or not a women’s college is for you. I went to a women’s college and found it a very enriching experience, but it was also what I wanted. You have to want to go to a women’s college. If you don’t, Haverford is obviously a great alternative - similar in size and function to Wellesley without being single-sex.

I wouldn’t put too much stock into that Harvard Crimson article. I wasn’t even fully sure what the author was trying to say; the article seemed to meander all over the place without reaching a point.

This is a very personal question. Haverford is deeply steeped in its quaker tradition and the honor code really lives there. Bico, Trico, and the Quaker consortium give students access to an incredible number of courses. If you want to be happy and well educated Haverford is a fantastic choice.

Wellesley is very rigorous ! If I’m not mistaken students can attend classes at MIT also. In my opinion, competition, rather than cooperation, is the social vibe. In the 12 college visits I made this last year I have never seen so many students sitting alone.

If you really want to be a super nerd and not be bothered much with other people (and the super touchy feely honor code) Wellesley offers an amazing education. For students who want a side of community with their education think Haverford.
