I was reading through some of the old threads and someone said that when they visited Wesleyan they realized that there is a big skiing "cult" on campus, and that it's a really big deal to students. I'm not complaining - that's exactly what I'd be looking for. Is that true? If so, where are they skiing at? I didn't know there was anywhere nearby.

Are you sure they were talking about this Wesleyan??

I mean, maybe they were. I just haven't really met anyone at all who is into skiing. Other than this one friend, who is from Vermont, where it's pretty much required. Are you sure it wasn't Williams or Middlebury or some other school like that? Though I suppose it could just not be a big thing in my particular group of friends.

I think I did hear someone say there's one within half an hour of campus.

there is definitely a ski team which does ski week during winter break somewhere in vermont, and races every weekend in the winter. they don't have practices except for that one week, i don't think. none of the mountains close to wes are really worth skiing on, i don't think... but foss hill has seen many a ski/snowboard jump constructed when the snow's right.

I think someone is referring to Middlebury, Williams, Bowdoin, or one of the other more northern NESCAC schools... wes definitely is not "ski-crazy" compared to the aforementioned schools... in fact, I have often heard of Middlebury being described as a "ski resort with classrooms"

yeah i really wish I could transfer into middlebury but they took like 1 out of 250 applicants last year. WTH! But I am applying to Bowdoin now. I like Wesleyan for MANY more reasons than this rumor that I'd heard, but I was interested. Thx for responses.

All 11 NESCAC schools, including Wesleyan, have ski teams, but they compete at widely varying levels.

The hard-core competitive ski teams are those at Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Midd, and Williams. They compete in a separate league (EISA), along with nationally-ranked schools like UVM, UNH, and Dartmouth.

The other NESCACs -- Amherst, Trinity, Conn College, Wesleyan, Tufts, and Hamilton -- compete at a lower, less competitive level in a different league (USCSA). The USCSA teams tend to be more casual "club" teams.

I'm at a loss for words...
Who would say such a thing about us?
