Wes vs. Swat vs. UVA

So out of 8 schools it's basically come down to these 3.

My top choice would probably be Swarthmore, however my main concern is the student body; I'm not sure I'd fit in with a group that focuses so much on activism, compared to what I'm used to. I'm worried I would spend all my time working and no time having fun.

Wesleyan is quite far from where I live (in Virginia), but I like what little I've seen of it (I visited briefly during Spring Break). My main concern there is the potential for acceptance into post-graduate institutions, probably law school.

My main concern with UVA is its size; however I have been accepted into the Echols program which would maybe change this? My objections to UVA are sort of personal: so many people from my high school are going to UVA that I'm not sure I would like it.

Any information you could provide about these schools, especially insights into campus culture, would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, I’m not sure why you’re worried about graduate school acceptance with regards to Wesleyan. It’s one of the top LACs in the country, and is comparable to Swarthmore in terms of grad school placement.

Also, Wesleyan students do pretty well on the LSAT (data uncited): [What’s your undergrad school’s average LSAT?](<a href=“TestMasters LSAT Prep Course | Live and Online Classes”>TestMasters LSAT Prep Course | Live and Online Classes)

Do note that Wesleyan’s student body is known for activism as well, possibly moreso than Swarthmore. However, if you don’t want to be a part of it, you can avoid it at both schools (possibly easier to avoid at Wesleyan - larger student body). Swarthmore does have a reputation where its students work to the point of not having fun (can’t comment either way), but Wesleyan seems to strike a nice balance.

UVA obviously is a different school entirely, being further south, with many more students. Wesleyan and Swarthmore are fairly similar, so you have to ask yourself, what type of environment do you want to be in? The small, intimate liberal arts college (Wes and Swat) or a large university (UVA)? All three have fantastic reputations; I wouldn’t try to use reputation in your situation, as all three have names that will help you get into grad school (perhaps Wes and Swat a bit moreso?)

I don’t know much about UVA, but as the Dad of a Wes '15 son and a Wes alum myself, believe me, Wesleyan is an outstanding choice if you see yourself headed to a top law school. I was a College of Social Studies major there and of the 15 who graduated in my class from CSS, 13 wound up in one of the top (primarily Ivy League) law schools. It hasn’t changed since I graduated. I wonder where you got the information that Wes might not be a good choice for a pre-law student?

As far as Swat goes, according to my son who spent a weekend there last fall, kids have a lot of fun there. And they are certainly not people who are all work and no play. People were relaxing and playing quite a bit there that weekend.

Good luck with your selection process. Three outstanding schools!

You’ll be fine at all three schools for law school. Swat does have a reputation for activism but not any more so than Wes. Have you heard of the protests on Foss Hill? People at Swat definitely put academics first but I’m sure you could find your niche among other like-minded people. UVA is a large state school, albeit one with a fantastic reputation, but as you pointed it out - you live in VA, it draws from the area, and it’s large. You have three awesome options! It seems like you want to go to Swarthmore distance-wise, so just visit again, talk to some students, and go with your gut!
