I’m a current student at Sweet Briar College and due to recent events, I have to look at other schools to transfer too. One of them is Wesleyan in Macon GA. Could someone give me some insight into the school. It’s reputation, academics, and school life? I’m a business major and art history minor. Thanks!
Wesleyan is in Macon, GA which is a small town and not exactly vibrant. There are 3 women’s colleges in Georgia and the one with the best reputation is Agnes Scott. I happen to be an ASC alum and if I had to pick between the 3 schools (Wesleyan, Breneau and ASC) I would hands down pick Agnes Scott. If you are turned off by the urban location, don’t be. It’s in an affluent suburb and the campus is immaculate. They make movies there it is so beautiful. I can’t speak much for Wesleyan except to tell you I did a project on Macon in grad school and it just cannot compare to everything Metro Atlanta has to offer. ASC has a strong reputation as a school for brainy girls for generations.
If you plan to major in business, being in Atlanta would serve you much better than Macon, IMO. Think about internships. Also Agnes Scott has a fabulous Art History prof, Donna Sadler. www.agnesscott.edu/academics/faculty/donna-sadler.html She has to rank as one of my favorite professors of all times. I loved her class a lot and only took it as an elective. She’s a great storyteller. But in terms of quality of life, ASC is amazing. The campus is lovely and the school is very supportive and committed to seeing you through graduation. It has a strong reputation for academics and the social life isn’t bad either. Atlanta is a college town and there are generally parties everywhere from Georgia Tech to Emory and ASC. There’s also a vibrant restaurant and bar scene in the suburb that ASC is located in (Decatur). Reading about SBC, I think you would enjoy the culture at Agnes Scott.
What’s your GPA?
Agnes Scott is definitely stronger and will have better offerings in both business and art history, but it’s also quite selective, so you’d need a pretty good GPA to get into it. Wesleyan would be a distant second but is cozy, academics are fine, professors are attentive and nurturing, and students generally very happy.
Hi jtsmith1! I am writing in reference to your question above. I work at Wesleyan College in the admission office and can speak not only to the strength of our business program, but also to the dynamics of Macon and Wesleyan College in general. I do not feel as though Wesleyan is a distant second when compared to Agnes Scott. It is true that ASC is an amazing school in a vibrant location with a beautiful campus! I could say the same for Wesleyan College though. 100% of our faculty hold the highest degrees in their field, our 200 acre wooded campus is located in the suburbs of North Macon within walking distance to shops, restaurants and the market. In fact, we host a farmer’s market on our campus twice a month! You can find out more about Macon online here: http://www.maconga.org/things-to-do/. Wesleyan has also just finalized the details for our new QEP, which is all about interniships and jobs after grad! Find out more here: http://www.wesleyancollege.edu/studentlife/career/qepexecutivesummary.cfm.
In addition to our location and charm, Wesleyan is significantly less expensive than ASC. Depending on your GPA, we will offer up to $14,000 (75% of tuition) in scholarships to transfer students and our net price is less than half the national average. Wesleyan was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women and we intend to be the last. I encourage you to delve deeper into researching both schools. If you would like more specific information about our Business program, I can have a faculty member contact you directly. Please let me know how I may help you as you make your way through this process.
@fish2bob, there are four women’s colleges in Georgia - the fourth is Spelman, which is a historically black college for women (and my alma mater). I know that it might not appeal to many of the women transferring from Sweet Briar, but it does exist
I grew up in metro Atlanta and went down to Macon twice a year for a weekend for religious conventions growing up. I can’t say I have extensive experience, but my impression of Macon wasn’t exactly a thriving college town. There were some things to do but not enough, and I do remember the adults grumbling about not having things to do after the conventions were over for the day. However, the last time I went down there was literally over 10 years ago so they may have made some changes/improvements to the surrounding town. There are two other major colleges located down there - Mercer University (a good private university popular among Atlanta-area students, especially pre-health) and Middle Georgia State College (a college that is transitioning from a two-year college to a four-year college). Robins AFB is also just south of Macon; this is relevant because a lot of military dudes are college-aged and like to party/socialize sometimes too.
I got the impression of Wesleyan as a pretty good mid-ranked women’s college - beautiful campus, average-ish students (45% acceptance rate; average SAT scores are in the mid-400s to mid-500s). They have a strong emphasis on women’s education. If you liked the really tiny, family-like feel of SBC then Wesleyan might be a good choice, because their student bodies are about the same size (ASC’s is slightly bigger). Wesleyan’s students seem to get internships at some pretty great places: Merrill Lynch, Georgia Power, Bank of America, GEICO.
However, I have to agree with the recommendations to at least look into Agnes Scott. ASC was tied with Spelman for my top choice college in high school and I went to Spelman simply because they offered me more scholarship aid. A lot of my friends from high school went there, so I was always on campus. The campus is absolutely lovely; the dorm rooms are huge and the dorms are really nice. Food is great! Library is really nice given the college’s size (much nicer than Spelman’s library, I must admit). They have a lot of business programs: [a business living-learning center](Office of Residence Life | Agnes Scott College), a [MBA linkage program with Georgia Tech](Economics | Majors & Minors | Agnes Scott College) complemented by [Women’s Bridge to Business](Bridge to Business | Agnes Scott College).
Decatur is such a cute funky town and you will have access to all of the amenities that Atlanta has to offer; I am super biased, of course, but Atlanta is such an AWESOME city to be a college student in. There are so many nearby colleges and so many other college kids from diverse places to party with. Party at Emory; party in the AUC; party at Georgia State; party at Georgia Tech (actually, scratch that last one…lol! kidding.) But there are also the professional and cultural benefits - internships at Atlanta businesses and exploring Atlanta’s museums. Speaking of Emory, Emory has a pretty close relationship with ASC and you might be able to cross-register for some classes at Goizueta.
