Do you know that NYU Medical School is free? I would guess that Wesleyan and NYU have a pretty close relationship and that you would have a good shot at making that happen.
NYU medical school acceptance rate is about 1.6%. I wouldn’t advise anyone to count on getting admitted to that school.
My daughter’s medschool roommate went to Wesleyan, my D went to a NESCAC school, as did her husband who she met in medschool. NESCAC schools have a great reputation for medschool acceptances.
If money isn’t the issue, go with Wesleyan.
@dadof4kids thanks for the thoughtful reply and confidence boost! I have heard that GPA is one of the determining factors for med school, so if I attend Wesleyan hopefully that won’t be an issue. I have a 4.0 but maybe that’s just because my high school grades easily.
Wesleyan does seem to have better connections/prestige, but I don’t know how helpful this will be. Wes is on the east coast and I practically live on the west coast right now. It feels like committing to Wesleyan means committing to life on the east coast (I said FEELS LIKE, not that it necessarily IS), which is a bit unsettling. However, I would love to spend some years on the east coast to see what it’s like. I want to eventually make my way back to the west coast after my undergrad adventures. Of course, like you said, a lot changes in your 20s so I might not feel this way down the road!
@juststaycool I do remember hearing that! Thanks for the reminder though. I do love that Wesleyan is located at the heart of the east coast and so most likely has connections to many more universities/people/businesses, especially in contrast to UM and MSU, which are both fairly isolated.
@seagreensoul Another advantage of Wesleyan is the Committee Letter - some colleges/universities (not all) have a Health Professions Committee which meets with applicants and writes a formal, personalized letter on the their behalf that is included in the application to medical school. I am a Wes alum in medicine - feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about Wesleyan pre-med.
I ended up living 30 minutes from where I grew up in fly over country, but lived in NYC for most of my 20s. It was a great experience. Lots of my friends from undergrad did the same. We spread out across the country right after graduation, but started moving home when we had kids. So it isn’t necessarily a permanent decision to go to the east coast.
The liberal arts IS science. It’s everything. It’s not just poetry.
I live out West. I know what you’re up against.
Good luck with your decision.
My D grew up ON the West coast. 1/3 of her team at Wes are West coast kids, from Seattle to LA. One is from Montana!
There are kids from the West all over that campus. Same with most other NESCAC schools.
