Wesleyan vs. BC vs. Northeastern Honors

I'm torn. I also got into BU but I've pretty much ruled that one out.
I will be a pre-med student with a major in biology.

What really draws me to Wesleyan is its strong pre-med program (more than 90% accepted to med school) and its research opportunities. It's also a really great school and I feel lucky to be accepted. The more I discover about it the more I like it! However, I've lived in Connecticut my whole life and I want to branch out. Plus Middletown isn't really the greatest city...

I'm also seriously considering Boston College, mainly because Boston is pretty much the best college town in the US and I know I'll have a great time there. Also, there are probably a lot of work opportunities there as far as getting experience in the medical field. Yet, I don't think BC's academics are as strong as Wesleyan's. And I'm kind of upset I didn't get into the honors program.

Northeastern is another good option, especially because of the honors program. They also gave me the biggest scholarship. I like their co-op program and getting in all that work experience because it will definitely help me get into med school. But prestige-wise I'm not so sure. I think the honors program is good but I don't know too much about it. Is it pretty selective or what? Please share anything you know about it!

I will be visiting all these schools again but please please please help me out and share any opinions you might have!

Wow, nobody?

NOT Northeastern. BC and Wes have much better reputations and IMHO are a much better investment. Sometimes, obnoxious kids refer to Northeastern kids as “BU rejects.”

That being said, choosing between BC and Wes, it depends on your personality. Have you visited both? With good study habits, you’ll do equally well at both schools in terms of premed preparation. I know many MDs that did their ugrad at both schools. Wes’s program is a notch above, but you’ll have to be okay with the vibe at Wesleyan. If you are, I’d go there.

Middletown and Chestnut Hill are also very different. Do you expect you’ll want to go into Boston a lot? Central connecticut isn’t particularly happening, which is fine if you’re the type of student who plans to stay on campus (lots do).

also, if you care about sports, BC is the better option. If you are into film and theatre, go to wesleyan.

I wouldn’t eliminate Northeastern solely for the prestige factor. There are many other factors that go into choosing a college that IMHO are more important, and if you are pre-med and you actually do go to medical school your undergraduate school won’t matter much anyway. Even if you don’t, though, Northeastern is still a good school and I wouldn’t rule it out based on a rumor by a few obnoxious undergrads.

Don’t sweat the honors program - sometimes it’s more work than it’s worth, especially at a liberal arts college. BC is bigger than my LAC, but where I was the honors program consisted of me taking classes I would have taken anyway and writing an honors thesis I had already decided to write, nothing more.

That said - and assuming that they are all affordable options for you…remember that you are only 18 or 19, and presumably will only be 21 or 22 when you graduate. You’ll have plenty of time to live in Boston in the future, if that’s the only thing drawing you to BC. Don’t pick a college solely based on the city that you want to live in, because you’ll have your entire working life to try and settle somewhere else. Maybe you’ll go to med school in Boston, or maybe your residency will be there, or maybe a post-doctoral fellowship or maybe you’ll just set up your practice there.

You’re also not limited by city to where you do internships and work experiences. If there are summer medical opportunities in Boston, you can always go there during the summer, or perhaps be a visiting student at BC for a semester while you work an externship in the city or something. You seem to be the most into Wesleyan as a SCHOOL, so I think that should be your choice.
