is Wesleyan "preppy"?

Before i continue with this post, I want to say that I dont mean to offend anyone who goes there (Im seriously considering going to Wes). I just have one question. I've heard that although the college is very liberal, which I am, (and very rich people can be very liberal sometimes), a somewhat large # of the students come from rich private schools /prep schools. I go to a great HS in the inner city, so Im used to a lot of economic diversity (and most of my friends are lower-middle class). Does Wesleyan have that diversity? or is it correct to say that it's preppy?

Preppy is a pretty broad term. Of all the liberal arts schools I know, Wesleyan is definitely one of the LEAST preppy I know, in terms of political atmosphere, clothing, taste, and general attitude. It's right out there with Oberlin, Reed, and to a lesser degree, Brown.

While it's true that a lots of the student body is from well-off neighborhoods, I found most of the students I know there to be pretty radically leftist, organic, tree-hugging, tolerant, "crunchy," even. THis is not necessarily a bad thing, as most students there are also pretty intellectual and socially conscious.

Then again, who are we to stereotype colleges? I imagine if you go there, you'll manage to find your own niche of friends and activities you'll be very happy with. Have you visited? Talked to current students and alumni? Glanced at the newspaper? Browsed the website? Contacted clubs and organizations? Come back when you've done all those.

wes is def not preppy

after visiting wesleyan i can assure you it is not preppy

Preppy is a relative term. However, 40% of Wesleyan comes from private schools, whereas private schools comprise a much tinier fraction of the nationwide high school population. Expanding access to higher education and opening the doors of the best schools to underprivileged students is a continuing struggle for all of higher education. In many ways, Wesleyan does put its money where its mouth is, but it's not perfect in this respect (then again, nowhere is).

PREPPY? WESLEYAN? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. no, not at all.
