My brother is applying to Illinois Wesleyan University for undergrad

My counseller told my mom that Wesleyan sends 90% + of its premed students to med school, as in 90% of people who apply make it into at least one, and my mom wants him to apply there.

I SEVERELY doubt this because it seems too good to be true because it is not as selective, and even colleges like duke and Upenn hover in the high 80s. Or am I wrong, and it really is that good. If so, why are the numbers so high?

Is he wrong, and is the IWU skewing statistics? I don't even think those stats are available!

Also, he has a 2.8 GPA UW.... He took all honors and a lot of APs and has a decent (like 30) ACT. Will he get in?

That stat is misleading because schools may not “endorse” a mediocre undergrad in his/her application to med schools. They probably have a pre-med mentoring track that’s selective. the ninety precent is probably from that group. But getting to BE a pre med student – that’s the real question. There exists weed- out courses along the way. Can your brother make it through that course? That remains to be answered.

IWU doesn’t have a magic formula for med school aspirants. I’d say don’t limit yourselves – but be realistic about your brother’s strengths and weaknesses.

It’s not as if some 2.5 GPA dope in some other major who happens to apply to med school just because they’re IWU students have a 90% chance of getting in.

you are probably fully aware of this, but just making sure…

I’m pretty sure that Wesleyan College in Illinois and Wesleyan University in Middlebury Connecticut are two totally different colleges.

Weslyan University in CT is highly prestigious (#1 liberal arts school in US last time I checked… no?) and is pretty darn close to ivy, so them having high stats is not surprising whatsoever.
However Wesleyan College is not nearly as prestigious (not that it’s a bad school!!) but their stats should be significantly lower.

Just wanted to make sure that you weren’t mixing up schools; Sorry if this was a waste of time
