What are these west coast universities' east coast counterparts? For example it is undisputed that Stanford is the Harvard of the West.

Berkeley
UCLA
USC
UCSD
Pepperdine
Pomona
CSU's

What are these west coast universities' east coast counterparts? For example it is undisputed that Stanford is the Harvard of the West.

Berkeley
UCLA
USC
UCSD
Pepperdine
Pomona
CSU's

Pomona - Swarthmore
CSU’s - SUNY’s

Berkeley-UMich
UCLA-UVA
USC-UNC
UCSD-?
Pepperdine-?
Pomona-Amherst
CSU’s-SUNY

Since when UMich became part of East coast universities? It was in Midwest the last time I studied geography.

Well we can throw in Midwestern schools too

My theories are:

Stanford = Harvard
Berkeley = U Mich (top of the top public schools)/Cornell
UCLA = UVA/UNC (good academics in a country club atmosphere)
USC = NYU/Columbia/UPenn (top metropolitan universities with a strong professional school focus)
UCSD = Brown
Pepperdine = Boston College
Pomona = Amherst
CSUs = SUNYs

CSUs= I would say SUNY and CUNY

USC = NYU/Columbia/UPenn

Just don’t expect the USC neighborhood to look anything like the metropolitan settings of the other three.

UCSD doesn’t seem like Brown, at least from what I’ve heard. I like the Pepperdine=BC analogy, however.

Yeah UCSD is hard to match.

I add UC Davis and it is definitely most like Cornell. I change Berkeley is most like UMich.

University of Washington, anyone? Yale or Princeton perhaps

UCSD= Wake Forest ?

I graduated from SUNY at Buffalo many years ago and it is definitely not like CSU’s. More like the UC’s.

Agreed. I have been to USC/NYU/Columbia. USC’s neighborhood is nothing like NYU/Columbia.

^ We know. None of the compared colleges have similar environment. However, when the world thinks of US cities, they first think of NYC then LA. This is largely due to film and television.

“However, when the world thinks of US cities, they first think of NYC then LA.”

In spite of what the world thinks, if you know it’s not true, why link them? :)

^ My reason was already stated.

They are “top metropolitan universities with a strong professional school focus.”

LA is a metropolitan city, get over it, and move on from this.

UCI?
Oregon?
Reed?
U of A?
