Is there any advantage to being from a West Coast state when applying to East Coast Boarding schools? I come from Arizona and know that there are not that many vying for spots at some of the top East Coast boarding schools.

Actually, there is hardly any advantage to that. Many students in those schools are from the west coast. Generally the students with the advantage are from the South or states such as Mississippi and North Dakota. The states that have an advantage are the ones without a boarding school tradition. For example, (I’m from southern Georgia) many people here seem to think that boarding school is a place where you send misbehaving kids, or a place to get rid of kids. Here’s a link that could give you more info.

OP is not from the west coast; AZ is considered southwest. Currently, Choate has only two students from AZ which definitely IS an underrepresented state.

Thank you ChoatieMom. I think being from Arizona will be an advantage. March 10th can’t get here soon enough! What an amazing campus Choate has!
