West point DAY IN THE LIFE

Can anyone tell me what a typical day is like for a cadet at west point? if this varies by year, then can you tell me what the differences are between a plebe's schedule and a 2nd year's?

I am a soldier in India with a rather large gun, but my son is in America looking at colleges and asked me this.

Thanks,

Hello,

Here is a plebe's general schedule at West Point. It varies for each plebe, depending on classes and extracirricular/corps squad activities.

0500-0615 = Wake up. One can choose when they want to wake up, as long as they are ready to go for formation.

0650 - Breakfast formation.
0700 - Breakfast
0730- Classes Begin. Classes are 55 minutes each, and there are 15 minute breaks in between class periods.
1205 - Lunch Formation / Lunch
1250 - Dean's Hour. Dean's Hour may just be some free time to study, or get ready for other classes, or there may be a mandatory briefing or meeting to attend.
1355-1600 - Classes
1610-1800 - Company Athletics / Drill / Study/Workout Time / Unit Training Time. This varies with the time of year and what is going on during the week.
1800-1930 - Duties and Dinner. Dinners are mandatory for plebes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Duties consist of delivering laundry.
1930-2130 - Evening Study Period. Mandatory study for academic courses.
2130-2330 - Perform duties, clean room, and free time.
2330 - TAPS / Bed

This is the general daily schedule during the week. Weekends are much more relaxed, and you have a lot more freedom in what you get to do. However, keep in mind that this is a general timeline; you will also have to spend a lot of time getting small errands done, doing duties, going on details, and memorizing plebe knowledge.

As you progress in years at the academy, you get more and more time to do what you want to do, and more options for activities. However, everybody keeps a very busy schedule.

NOTE: Corps squad sports start around 1600 and don't end until much later in the day.

NOTE: Basic training leaves little to no free time. Basic training also gives you no choice for wake-up time. They will wake you up when it is time to get going. This can happen anywhere from 0430-0700, depending on the day.

Hey, thanks a lot! That is very informative & helpful.

CBT will keep you busy but there will be plenty of times when you'll be bored out of your mind from reading knowledge all day.

Will those who memorize some knowledge before they go look good, or like a tool?

like a complete and utter tool

any experience with this yourself frijoles?

no but you dont want to be that guy, dont ever pimp your classmates

I agree, don't memorize knowledge before coming.

Enjoy your summer and relax doing fun stuff. You will have time to learn the knowledge anyway.

Upperclassmen pick up on the idea that you studied beforehand, and it can get you noticed. Just learn things along with the rest of your classmates.

dumb question, but with that kind of loaded schedule, do a lot of cadets have fun on weekends at least?

It's what you make it. If you're not involved in any sports or clubs, weekends can get really boring.

I hear the Saturday night shoe shining parties are great fun.

They do get to have fun on weekends. Like Triggs said...if they get involved in clubs and sports there are plenty of chances to do things. Some examples of my plebe son's weekend activities:
-took a pass and spent the weekend in New York City (twice)
-history dept. trip to Antietam Battlefield
-Infantry Tactics Club field exercises (twice, if I remember correctly, could be more)
-home football games

If you go to youtube and search using West Point or USMA you will find videos of some of the other fun they have. ;)

You will enjoy a weekend of sleeping and doing homework every once in a while too.

Some of those youtube videos are great!! Look for one with a 100-lb water balloon. I wonder if anyone was walking the area for that one.
